The family of a five-year-old who was raped at Antop Hill on Wednesday alleged that Wadala TT and Antop Hill police argued over jurisdiction for over five hours as their daughter lay bleeding. The family and a group of youngsters who spotted the disoriented girl on the road around 11 pm finally told the police they do not care about an FIR and took her to Sion Hospital at 3 am, where doctors operated on her to stop the bleeding. Around 11 pm on Tuesday, K Sheena Bhandari, a resident of Sagardeep society, saw the girl crying and all alone. "I was on a walk with my wife when we saw the girl, crying and asking for help. At first, we thought she must have got lost. When we questioned her, she could recollect her parents' names but not her address," Bhandari said. He added, "She said she doesn't know how she reached where we found her. She could only remember that someone forcefully held her and hit her several times. Later, we noticed that she was bleeding from her private parts. We realised that something bad had happened to her and immediately called the police helpline number 100." Night without end This is when the police inaction began. Mahendra Gaikwad, who stays in Pentagalaxy society nearby, said the police did not reach the spot for over 45 minutes after the call to their control room. "Two personnel from Antop Hill police station landed up after we called the helpline number again around 12.30 am. When they realised it was a case of rape, they called in women personnel who took another 15 minutes to arrive," Gaikwad added. It was almost 1 am when the girl was taken to Antop Hill police station, where the victim and those accompanying her were made to wait for nearly 45 minutes. "We were requesting the police to admit her to hospital immediately, who told us that preliminary investigations will have to be done first as it was a 'sensitive case'," Bhandari alleged. By then, the girl's parents also reached Antop Hill police station. "I had already lodged a missing person complaint at Wadala Truck Terminus police station. They called to say I should go to Antop Hill police station as they have found my daughter," the victim's father, a resident of Vijaynagar in Antop Hill, said. He added, "I was shocked when I came to know of my daughter's condition. Around 9.30 pm on Tuesday, my wife had sent her to the shop for turmeric powder. When she didn't return for over 30 minutes, my wife enquired with the shopkeeper who said my daughter had left with the turmeric powder. We immediately lodged the missing person complaint at Wadala TT police station." It was around this time that Antop Hill police realised that the girl had gone missing from Vijaynagar, which falls under Wadala TT police station, and took the victim and her parents there in a van. "When we reached there, officials from both police stations were locked in an argument over whose jurisdiction the case fell under. My daughter was in pain, but no one cared," her father said, Around 2.30 am, the family left Wadala TT police station with Antop Hill police, who took her to their police station instead of Sion Hospital. This time, irate locals decided to admit the victim. "Chaos ensued, and finally around 3 am, she was taken to Sion Hospital. This is how our the police help rape victims," Gaikwad said. Delay at Sion Hospital At Sion Hospital, too, another hour was lost as the authorities, terming it a sensitive case, waited for senior forensic and gynaecology teams to examine her. Finally, at 6 am on Wednesday, the girl underwent two surgeries. A forensic doctor who examined the girl said she had been brutally raped. "It appears a sharp object was inserted in her private parts. It's also possible that multiple people have raped her," the doctor added. Ashok Dudhe, DCP (Zone 5) told Mirror, "Yes, initially there was some confusion, but taking the seriousness of the case into account, officials from both police stations visited the spot and began investigations. Yes, there was delay but it was just for two hours, not four.
