The cabinet sub-committee constituted to curb corruption and protect public money has unearthed a massive housing scam in which more than Rs 7,000 crore was allegedly siphoned off by politicians, contractors and officials. Of the total 43 lakh houses constructed during the previous Congress regime in Andhra Pradesh, more than 7 lakh houses do not exist though money was shown as spent in building them. "The 7 lakh houses exist only in the records. There are no such houses on ground. Our efforts to locate these houses have failed. This is the biggest scam in the state," said a senior minister who is part of the cabinet sub-committee. Efforts to trace the real beneficiaries did not succeed as most of the records were apparently fudged by district-level officials. Several officers associated with the housing schemes are now facing charges over their role in selecting the beneficiaries and releasing the funds. During the YSR regime, the scheme to construct houses for the economically weaker sections (EWS) was started with much fanfare and the state had claimed that it had constructed more than 43 lakh houses across the 13 districts in Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana government has already ordered a CID inquiry into the irregularities in the housing scheme. In Telangana, as per records, 22.5 lakh houses were constructed but when the field checks were carried out, one third of the houses did not exist. |
