Landed in Seattle Tacoma on Saturday at 5pm - British Airways flight. Immigration was a breeze - the guy took exactly 45 seconds to let me into the United States. I had a ton of documents that I was told to carry with me. This guy just looked at the passport and didn't even want to check the invite letter. Baggage took its own sweet time to arrive. Then after passing through another bored customs guy, I was asked to deposit the bag again on a belt. I was a little confused. A Pakistani handler explained to me that I needed to get onto a train there and go to main terminal - and again wait for my baggage to arrive there. Since roaming without a Matrix SIM is injurious to health, I had gotten one for me and it worked like a charm the moment I switched the phone on. Full LTE from AT&T. 150 free minutes to India. However with WhatsApp calling and availability of Wifi internet almost everywhere in the US, I am not worried about India calls now. Then I boarded a bus to the rental car facility and got a Jetta. (I know, small car but I wasn't looking for a big behemoth anyways. It's been years since I drove on the US soil. I was most worried about the "Right Vs Left" paradigm confusion but trusted my instincts based on one fact - That I learnt my driving here in the US and later acclimatized myself with Indian conditions. So I thought I could manage it. The drive from the airport to the hotel was uneventful except for the one interaction with a cop car just outside the rental car exit. Both of us arrived at the stop sign at the same time (on the same direction - two lanes). And both have to take a left onto a single lane. I was scared! Then I made eye contact with the cop and nodded. He nodded too. Then I took the turn. He followed me till the next signal where I had to take a "free right". I made sure I stopped completely and then scanned the lights for any "No Free Right" boards. Then I turned half expecting him to flash his lights. He didn't. I merged onto the freeway and relaxed immediately. That lasted just a couple of minutes. Then I was greeted with something I was most comfortable with - a traffic jam - on the freeway! I thought US freeways were just that - free ways. But here was a bumper to bumper situation that wasn't much different from what I experienced day in and day out in Lakdi Ka Pul and Liberty! America strives on parking fees! Unfortunately my hotel is in downtown area and so I have to cough up parking fees. 25$ a night! I guess, the revenue from downtown parking alone would be a significant head in the revenue report of the city! I should have depended on Uber instead of renting a car! But then, I wouldn't have the freedom I now did. (Drove to Denny's at 5:30 in the morning - Couldn't sleep beyond 5am thanks to the jet lag) No matter what anyone says - There's nothing like an All American Breakfast. If there is one thing I miss about America - It is this breakfast. 20 hour flight journeys are a royal PITA but at the end of that journey the thought that there would be a great breakfast - made me grit my teeth and endure the pain. (Exit row and World Travel Plus seats made it a little better of course) Last night after checking into the hotel, I wanted to walk to the burger king a mile away and eat a veggie burger. At 8:15pm I walked to the lobby of the hotel and asked the lady behind the counter if it was safe to roam around in the downtown area this late on a Saturday afternoon. "Oh it is absolutely safe" and then she added, "as long as you don't venture off the main streets." I decided to take a chance. Didn't want to drive. I walked slowly keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings. My fears proved to be totally unfounded. The downtown area at 8:30 in the night was bursting with activity and a lot of pedestrians. After 20 hours of zero activity, this two mile walk (round trip to Burger King) was really soothing to the legs. At Burger King - I smiled at the girl behind the counter and said "A Veggie Whopper?" She replied, "Yeah? Sure you want the whopper? We have a veggie burger you know." I nodded, "I am new here. What is the difference between a whopper and a burger?" She looked at me boringly. "Whopper doesn't have the patty. Burger does." "I didn't know you had a proper veggie burger on your menu. Back in 2000 there wasn't one." I said. She didn't say anything. "OK" I said, "Burger please" I had forgotten how great the fries tasted here in the US. There's something that brings that great flavor to the fries here. (Maybe beef oil I don't know. I don't care.) It was heavenly. Maybe I should try a McD next. Felt very sleep at 10:30pm and was a bit tired after the walk. So I hit the sack and woke up at 5am unable to sleep further. The temperature now is very charming - around 12 degrees Centigrade and expected to reach 21/22 (Centigrade) by the afternoon. There are two cousins who live 20 minutes away from me. I have a car. I have nothing to do in the hotel now. Still I am reluctant to leave the hotel. Feeling very lazy this morning. I thought of spending a bit of time in recording my experiences of rediscovering America. (Would be a nice Medium post along the lines of what Punit Soni is doing now about his experiences in Bangalore) I may decide to catch OK Kanmani movie in a •••••• cinema dedicated to fleece hapless Indians playing on their "Apna Movies" syndrome. (I myself included - I could watch this movie in a very comfortable Prasads next week in Hyderabad but I can't wait to catch the latest from Mani Ratnam) For now, let me brew that Starbucks coffee and stare at the lovely trees and the far off snow capped mountains from the hotel window.
