Andhra Pradesh has many favorable characteristics which appeal to business investors compared to other Indian states. It has a long coastline with many good ports, law and order is well maintained, a young and skilled English speaking population is available for employment, and the state government is determined to reduce the time required to set up new businesses by simplifying its approval process. Andhra Pradesh, under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is planning to develop a new capital city as a smart city. This has generated considerable interest among Japanese industry, which is looking for new business avenues and investment opportunities in the state. Given this background, the technical delegation was organized and its visit to India was realized.

A delegation of technical experts from Japanese companies having cutting-edge technologies in the smart community sector visited Andhra Pradesh from March 4 to 6, 2015. The visit was organized by NEDO, and the program included a technical seminar and site visits.
The technical seminar was enthusiastically received, and was attended by around 100 Japanese experts from 30 companies, about 180 Indian representatives from 100 companies, around 20 participants from the Andhra Pradesh government, and about 35 members from various media organizations. In his keynote address, Chief Minister Naidu greeted the audience in Japanese, which he is now studying, and said that Andhra Pradesh is the most favorable and easiest state in India to do business. He also said that the state can serve as a logistics hub for South East Asia, and that he wants to build another Tokyo in Andhra Pradesh (referring to the ongoing development of a new capital city). The Chief Minister also had open dialogs with members of the visiting Japanese delegation. In addition, 14 companies gave presentations on their ability to provide smart company solutions to the Indian audience.

The site visits included the new capital city area near the city of Vijayawada, the town of Krishnapatnam with the largest port in India, and Sri City, an industrial township with a special economic zone. These areas are looking forward to investment and the presence of Japanese companies. There were also presentations by officials of Andhra Pradesh, and they had meaningful exchanges of opinions with members of the Japanese delegation. The state government chartered helicopters in order to provide an aerial view of the proposed development site for the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. Members of the delegation had meaningful site visits as they obtained first-hand experience which was not possible through only the technical seminar.

This delegation visit was the first event held after the signing of an MOU between NEDO and Andhra Pradesh in November 2014. It was a joint effort by the public and private sectors.
