While the studio was allotted a sprawling 22 acres in Banjara Hills in 1975 for the promotion of the Telugu film industry, the facility is now on its way to becoming an `integrated state-of-the-art entertainment media centre' (IEMC) complete with modern commercial establishments and theatres. "This is not acceptable as this would give the promoters the scope to set up businesses that are not related to the film industry," said T Harish Rao, member of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) who has been fighting with the government to resume this land for several years now. Rao's opposition to the new project, which Annapurna Studios floated in 2007, is rooted in the fact that the land was handed over to the studio at a measly Rs 7,500-Rs 8,000 per acre only for the promotion of the film industry. Allowing other activities there, he claims, is in violation of the original agreement between Annarpurna and the government. Studio officials could not be reached for a comment despite repeated attempts.
