When the biggest asset of team is its unpredictability, it just means there is not much to say anything else about the team. Pak keeps churning out Pace bowlers like disney churns out "lovable" characters. The only thing that is consistent with Pak, is their bowling. In my mind there was no contest between the two teams. I was sure Pak batting would falter against the likes of Starc and co. The only way they could win the game is they bat first, and put on atleast 280, and their fielders dont drop catches, and the pak bowlers can win the game for them. Pak batting followed the same known template. openers give in quick, and then the batsmen who settle keep knocking the balls into the hands of the feilders until they pressure themselves to hit decent deliveries in to the air, in the hopes of the ball landing in a no-mans land. then afridi would come in, hit couple of balls over the park, and then loft one to the boundary fielder. No change of scritp so far. 230 was always gettable target for Aussies, especially with Smith batting like he is on a different plan, where the ball just hits the middle of the bat, and Maxwell crazy hitting tying to be a clone of A B Devil, and any other batsmen chipping would just make it easier. However, what we saw yesterday and will probably remember for the rest of our lives was a display of pace bowling by Wahab Riaz. Mitchell Starc tried to be naughty and sledged when was at the crease, and Wahab decided to give it back, give it better than what he got. His good ole chin music reminded me of the days of west indian giants. the 15 short balls he bowled to watson, were bang on the target, and would be remembered as one of the best spells in a world cup. Watson was like a deer caught in head lights, cant move away even he wanted to. the sledge was at its best too. Watson had the last laugh, hooking once bouncer to a six off wahab 's second spell, but by then Wahab was visibly tired. two unfortunate things happend here that are unfortunate, one is watson, going through this ordeal, has found his form by the end of the innings, and that means now Indians have to deal with Watson along with Smith in the middle order. and the other is Misbah, the sole reason, pak cricket has not disintegrated after the scandalous past few years, will retire. one not so unfortunate thing is, Afridi retired too, although retirement means something else to him. he might be thinking he is retiring to sleep that night, and play the next morning. Indians will look to as profit as much from the weaker fifth bowling combination of Aussies, and pray Smith has a hangover on the day, and sees more than one ball travelling on the pitch. |
