My first Telugu movie in a theatre in nearly 2 years, the last one being SVSC. Of course, i have seeing some movies in TV. Also my first NTR movie in a theatre after Simhadri. I have not seen many of his movies like Brindavanam, Adhurs, Yama Donga etc apart from snippets on TV. So i can't exactly say how he has improved or not vis-a-vis his earlier movies, but one thing is certain - nobody else in Telugu could have done justice to the role as he has done. Daya must be the most negative character played by a hero in Telugu cinema. Though other movies like Businessman had a negative protagonist, here the impact of his negativity is even more shocking than Businessman. Here Daya is negative as he wants to be negative unlike BM where there was an attempt to justify his actions (with a motive provided in that silly flashback) which greyed out his blackness. Temper is relentlessly entertaining with never a moment of boredom. I liked the ending too. Within the milieu of Telugu commercial cinema and the audience love for vigilante justice, it works well. What i did not like about the movie is the tone of the movie. It is at a consistently high pitch - not just in the voices of the actors, but in the pace, the fast cuts, the throbbing and loud BGM, etc. There are no mellow moments, no scenes of quiet introspection or reflection, no subtlety to the proceedings...every moment, even the could-have-been-touching scenes, are underlined, in bold and italics, with a loud BGM, slow motions, and side characters explaining it further if we missed out the earlier cues. Just a song has a pallavi, anu pallavi and charanam, so too a movie should have a rhytym to its proceedings. Another big negative is the songs - not just are they placed at the wrong places, they are nauseating to boot. Temper is a perfect example of how wrong placement and wrong songs can kill the mood. I am not downplaying songs which are a very Indian way of telling a story. But to interrupt a serious emotional flow with a song like Temper is unpardonable. Atleast in earlier days, they used to have songs which are topical. Here they are just there to showcase NTR's dancing skills. What ultimately pushes aside the negatives is NTR's bravura performance and pulsating screenplay. Mani Sharma's BGM is quite good and adds a lot to the movie, though it has shades of his BGM for Lakshmi Narasimha. All in all, a very enjoyable movie. |
