http://www.firstpost.com/india/india-corruption-2-0-anna-haz are-lead-farmers-agitation-ndas-land-ordinance-2102999.html Anna Hazare to lead farmer's agitation against NDA's land ordinance New Delhi: In the second such big mass movement after his anti-corruption agitation three years ago, social activist Anna Hazare will spearhead farmers across the country in their opposition to the BJP-led central governmentâs Ordinance amending the Land Acquisition Act. Jantar Mantar would be the venue for the three-day agitation--demonstration rally beginning 23 February. Anna Hazare will lead another agitation against the government. PTI The agitation shall witness gatherings of thousands of farmers from states who are upset with the Narendra Modi governmentâs move to make major amendments to the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 through an ordinance, making it virtually ineffective against mindless acquisition. Besides, farmers and their organizations, social bodies and political parties have also lent support to this movement. However, on the first day of the movement on 23 February, which will be led by Anna Hazare, no political party would share the dais. The next day, political parties would join the farmers. âAnnaji doesnât want any politicization of the movement. So on the first day, itâll be only he who, along with farmers, would address and stage demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Lots of farmers and organizations had met Annaji at Ralegan Siddhi and urged him to lead this movement,â Col (retd) Dinesh Nain told Firstpost. He is coordinating on Hazareâs behalf. âThrough this demonstration rally, we want to caution the central government not to proceed with the Ordinance. If, the government fails to revoke it, we would stage indefinite agitation at Ramlila Maidan and the entire nation would support it. Our aim is to build a corruption-free Bharat (India),â said Anna Hazare in a signed statement issued by him on Monday. An umbrella organization â âBhoomi Adhigrahan Pratirodh Andolanâ (Land Acquisition Protest Movement) has been set up to bring various farmersâ bodies under one roof, which will stage protest marches, rallies and demonstrations in Delhi. âItâs a purely farmersâ agitation and 23 all-India farmersâ organizations will be joining hands. We met Annaji and requested him to provide leadership to this movement, as this ordinance of the Centre would crush farmers, if implemented,â said Lt Col (retd) SP Singh of the umbrella organization. Till now, farmers from ten states â Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan - have agreed to join the agitation. What is the Ordinance all about? The UPA government had brought in the Land Acquisition Act, better known as the âRight to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013', replacing the Land Acquisition Act 1894 of the British period. It was introduced as a safeguard against forced acquisition of land from farmers besides as a measure to ensure fair resettlement and rehabilitation of displaced farmers and provide them adequate compensation for loss of land. also seeAnna to protest in Jantar Mantar against land ordinance amendments Sakshi Maharaj's U-turn: PM Modi is now 'divine power', 'India's divine destiny' From PM Modi to Anna Hazare: Leaders condole the demise of RR Patil After coming to power at the Centre in 2014, the NDA government promulgated an Ordinance making significant changes in the Act, including removal of consent clause for acquiring land in five areas - industrial corridors, PPP projects, rural infrastructure, affordable housing and defence. âThe Ordinance says that the mandatory "consent" clause and Social Impact Assessment will not be applicable if the land is acquired for these five purposes. The clause in the Ordinance that asks for acquiring of land almost forcefully would bring doom to farmers. It took two years to draft the Land Acquisition Bill, and the NDA government took only two hours to do away with it. The only objective of this Ordinance is to provide benefit to the corporate sector. How can the government forcefully snatch away land from farmers?â questioned Col Rai Singh Balhara, president of Delhi Gramin Samaj, an NGO working for protection of farmersâ rights. âThis Ordinance is worse than the laws of the colonial period, as it is deeply anti-farmer. A lot of displacement would take place if the clauses in the Ordinance get implemented. I Hope it doesnât survive in Parliament,â remarked economist Professor Jayati Ghosh. As of now, the Left parties â CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) - along with the Congress - have decided to join the agitation. Added Balhara, âWeâve urged all the political parties, including the BJP to join the cause. Weâre yet to hear from others.â In the Delhi assembly election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had grabbed all 14 rural seats and the said ordinance was its major poll plank. âResettlement of farmers and compensation against the sale of land are major issues in Delhi, and farmers have been exploited badly. There are poor farmers whose lands have been acquired, but no rehabilitation done for them. Moreover, there is rampant corruption at the levels of village Patwari, Revenue and, Land & Building department of Government of NCT. As a result, the farmers end up paying bribes, sometimes more than what they get as compensation. This ordinance is draconian,â AAP MLA from Bijwasan, Col (retd) Devinder Sherawat told Firstpost. |
