Film distributors and cinema halls owners, who claimed to have suffered huge losses following Rajinikanth-starrer Lingaa ’s poor run, have announced a mass begging protest throughout the State from next week. The protest is expected to begin outside the actor’s Chennai residence.. Addressing a media gathering at a studio in Vadapalani on Saturday evening, distributors from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and other parts of the State, including the north and south Arcot regions, claimed that they had incurred huge losses after distributing the film and demanded the immediate intervention of Rajinikanth. Otherwise, they would be forced to go ahead with the protest throughout the State, they said. “We distributed Lingaa with the faith that the film will do well. But, the movie flopped and most small distributors and also cinema hall owners in various districts suffered huge losses. However, the producer and initial distributors made profits of not less than Rs. 100 crores,” said Tiruchi and Tanjore distributor Singaravelan. He said their plea for a refund of Rs. 35 crore was declined a few days ago by the producer and the actor’s representative. Following protests a few weeks ago, the distributors were allegedly promised only a 10 percent reimbursement of their losses which they refused to accept but wanted the actor to address the crisis immediately. The begging agitation is scheduled to start on Tuesday from outside the Poes Garden residence of the actor, Mr. Singaravelan added.
