It might seem implausible to some, but not to Padmasree Warrior of Vijayawada,who became Motorola Inc's chief technology officer (CTO) this January. She is the highest-ranking woman in the company's 75-year history. Warrior says she considers it an honour to lead a global technical team on the company's behalf. Humble words for the vanguard of a group involved in commercialising new technology. "I enjoy the challenges that my role brings," says Warrior. Those words speak for themselves if one goes by the story she has to tell about her long journey to the top. She studied at the Children's Montessori School and Maris Stella College in Vijayawada. She set off for IIT-Delhi, to get a bachelors degree in chemical engineering in the 1970s. In her classrooms there, and later while studying for a masters degree at Cornell University, girls were in a minority, she says. She joined a Motorola semiconductor factory in 1984. An interest in science and mathematics, instilled by her parents, made her take up this carrer, says Warrior. Though she initially wanted to major in physics, her IIT days got her interested in chemical engineering. Another interest she developed at that time was in her future husband. The couple have a six-year-old son. Besides her husband, Warrior's parents have had the most influence on her life, she says. Not surprisingly, she considers walks with her family across a bridge on the river Krishna among her favorite memories. "The river and the hills make Vijayawada a pretty town," she says. Another enduring image of Vijayawada is of "conquering" a hill with her friends at the age of 14, says Warrior. Though they lost their way at first, the group achieved their objective after scrambling over rocks and rough terrain. They named that hill 'Kashta Parvatham.' Though visits to her hometown are rare, the changes in the state, especially on the high-tech front, have not been lost on Warrior. She says Hyderabad's progress should be extended to other parts of the state — its small towns and villages. Not an uphill task, she would tell you.} | ||
