Thoppasi ratings maa company ki levu.. if you work and delivered you will be in office ledhante you are fired anthe.. No yrly ratings and dhaanni base chesi 1%, 3% hikes undav.. its all upto market not on candidate base, if market lo SR engineer is getting 150 then the company pays 180-200.. anthe kaani its not individual performance because NFLX treat everyone same performers. Ala ani pani cheyyani junk untadhi anukoku.. chaala harsh decisions untaai.. yesterday maa team lo iddarini fire chesaaru because they were not delivered on time. Okadu manager and inkodu senior most engineer who wrote books on Scala and they both are thopus.

STA is senior Tech Architect

till before PM , we used to have single track , then starting from PM we will have two tracks , one for Managerial and one for technical..

later managerial will goto Delivery manager...technial architect will goto Industry principle..etc...

10-12 years back in infy , we used have 3 ratings 1/2/3 with 25/45/30 etc....but later that hcnages to 5 rating system 1+/1/2/3/4...so from time to time they change the rules to accomodate more people to safe bucket which is B or 2.

Boss this is not a Bad rating at all for a period of 5 yrs where
only 10% workforce gets A,
20% workforce gets B,
60% workforce gets C
10% workforce gets D & E
in most of IT companies in India.. maa company lo resources who has resigned during appraisal cycle are moved to D as they wont even know that they got D. By the time ratings are released D are out of company in new job.
if a resource in project gets D , he cant be released to bench, need to put in improvement plan before released and need to be changed to C in next 3 months.

No one can tell C means - under performer. Give them an opportunity to re skill themselves and prove.

Most of the times there wont be any basis for these...

I remember one of my colleagues who is onsite was given very poor rating, though he has no issues with customer (later he left the company and joined the customer as employee)

You got it right feelgud. Tcs is well within its right to layoff unwanted employees. Not all the people are bad performers but they are not wanted anymore.


This is correct and not handled properly. TCS(staff that handled layoff) was a bit arrogant in mentioning performance as 'one' of the criteria. If Performance is criteria, there are different ways this attrition should happend. Anytime a performance related layoff happens, there is a lot of justification documentation company should have on its behalf to fight back these kind of lawsuits.

Also in US, these mass layoffs are governed at County/Town level.
If you are going to remove more than x% of your workforce, you have an agreement with local government that some special actions need to take place. You cannot just term them as unwanted.

Leaving the performance rating (B or C or whatever) aside, if a private company needs cost cutting, they are free to do so. if you terminate services of an employee who has been with you for the last three or five years on the ground of non performance, it will be highly prejudicial and will be viewed as victimisation.

There are so many assumptions in this statement.

C is a relative ranking. Lazy organizations rely on Standard bell curve. IF you team have 10 people, bell indicates 1 A, 7B , 2C(can be split into 1C +1d etc). It just means, by law of averages there are going to be low performers. But this also assumes your mean(or average) is always constant.
Simple ga cheppalante Sachin, Dravid , laxman ni bell curve lo vesthe, evariko vakariki C vasthundhi.. that doest mean they are underperformers and should be cut.. Right??
This system also works but there has to be tremendous amount of standadizaton that needs to be done. Performance rating will always be problem as there is a lot of objectivity in rating of these jobs. There was a train of thought that Microsoft's loss of relevance is tied to hard bell curve model Steve Balmer implemented.

I am fine with what TCS is doing...

Its not like they were removing without notice kadha. They were paying 3 Months salary also without working...

Moreover I would have objected if they have layoff and outsourced those jobs to some other country...Ala kaadhu kadha, they are just replacing with Freshers...

I am happy that they were giving break to lot of unemployed ppl because of this move... :-)

Therefore the entire Chapter V-A and Chapter V-B of the Industrial Disputes Act applies only to factories, mines or plantations employing the prescribed number of workmen as the case may be. Coming to your query, IT/ITES/BPO companies are not either factories or mines or plantations. Therefore, Chapter V-A and Chapter V-B are not applicable to IT/ITES/BPO companies. If you read my previous post, you will notice that I have stated that the Industrial Disputes Act prescribes the procedure to be followed in case of lay-off, retrenchment or closure and does not confer any power on the employer to lay-off, retrench or for closure. Therefore the power to lay-off has to be found in the certified standing orders, or model standing orders. If both the certified standing orders and the model standing orders are silent or in cases where the Industrial Employment(Standing Orders) Act is not applicable to the IT/ITES/BPO companies, then the power to lay off has to be found in the contract of employment which is the appointment letter. If the appointment letter is also silent then the employer has no power to lay off and if he lays off his workmen, they are entitled to full wages for the period for which they were laid off.
