Its simple supply vs demand economics. There is too much production across the world. US has figured out extracting more from its reserves using unconventional drilling methods. In addition to this the slowdown in emerging economies (China) has reduced the demand for oil. Saudi's have a budget that is based on price of the oil, they just can't keep pushing oil price lower and screw themselves. Russia under Putin leadership had increasingly become difficult to handle, with dictating power of Oil&Gas export to EU and bulldozing neighbors at its own freaking terms & army at disposal Meanwhile, OPEC maintaining $60/bbl to keeping US shale boom viable though it is showing nightmares to OPEC.. it is a well crafted attack against Russia which is already facing sanctions for its muscle show in recent past Russia will loose $2bn for every $1/bbl price drop.. repulsion effects are so quick that Russian central bank hiked interest rate to 17% which is all time high by any standard.. With this debt borrowing rate any project is uneconomical One of my associate said, "you get used to $60/bbl or below for 2 more years".. which means Russia is gone for dogs What made OPEC and US work together! 1. Distressed EU loosing regional dominance and getting sucked by Russian gas monopoly 2. Russia advancing into EU region with dictating terms and military 3. US (a country which is has recently become gas superpower and oil independent) and Saudi (largest oil producer) are always allies 4. Saudi knows Shale oil boom will dent its market share in few years and reading to hold back US shale boom by price war 5.
