And one more thing, i can't get the fuss by a few right wingers. If anything, the movie is rather mild, compared to OMG. It is because we are in a Hindu country, can we point out faults at our religion. Seinfeld does not go around throwing punches at Christianity (refer the Dentist, yadda-yadda-yadda episode). Only those who know a institution or system well can criticise it. It took a brahmin like Raja Rammohan Roy to aggressively pursue rooting out behind sati, widow remarriage etc. Same reason why the Communist movement was dominated by Reddies and Kammas. Raju Hirani would have been hard pressed to comment about Islam in the same way.

PK has a idea that is admirable and if one should support a movie for its message, then PK is worthy. But that's about it. What could have been a one hour episode in Satyameva Jayate, becomes a 150 minute movie with unnecessary and terrible songs, slapstick humour and poor screenplay/ editing.

PK is about an alien who ends up on earth to do some research and loses his remote control, that can call back his spaceship, to a petty thief who sells it to a cult swami. The rest of PK is partly about trying to get his remote back and the balance about trying to get his bearings in an alien world. The movie shows Hirani as the auteur that he is, a Capra-esqe teller of homilies and fables. The story telling also unfortunately is set in the 40s.

PK ends up being not just a reflection of but also similar to the very cultists it sends up. Just like the babas and evangelists reduce religion to their baubles, powders and threads, Hirani also reduces the movie to some pithy sayings, forced humour and easy denouements. While this approach might have worked for goons becoming doctors, for a complex topic like God and organised religion, it come across as confused and frankly, insulting.

The entire second half is a jumbled mess with Hirani desperately trying a "Wrong number" to become an "All is Well'. This angle appeared forced and incomprehensible, the last 15 minutes of Interstellar made more sense. While i understand the need for a deus ex machina especially when dealing with a sensitive topic , Wrong Number is honestly a Wrong Number.

There is not much of a difference between PK and the other mainstream Hindi movies, except that here it comes in the garb of a holy robe. The holiness worn by Aamir. The movie exploits Aamir's public person and blends it into the message it wanted to convey. It would just not have worked with any other actor, not that it works here. .

When the only laugh out loud moment in the movie is pulling out a guy's dhoti from his bum crack, one can imagine how boring the rest of the movie is. Oh My God pulled no punches in covering the same topic and it was funnier to boot.
Aamir did a good job and was the only saving grace. Anushka was stunning, as one can be when your lips are as big as your breasts. The other actors do not have much to do.

What kills the movie is the confused screenplay. There are no dramatic moments in the movie, no moment where one is looking forward to the next scene, and in most parts very predictable which is the worst thing to say about a screenplay. For instance, why doesn't Aamir learn other languages by holding Anushka's hands just like he learns Bhojpuri. There are so many other screenplay twists that could have made the movie more interesting. The movie's dramatic graph goes in a straight line, like an ECG, where a straight line conveys death. The technical department too is a mess. There is one music director (Shantanu Moitra), 2 songs by other music directors, and separate background score music directors.

For those who are interested, the smooch (mandatory in Hindi movies) comes in at around 15 mins into the movie.

For those who want a number rating, i would not give anything more than a 2 on 5.
