Filmbuff:

Lol...antha scene ledhu kaani...yup, Big heroes shoud attempt more such genres. But unfortunately...2 issues:

- Extremely High Budgets
- Devastating Track records

Case in point - Anji, Deviputrudu.

These kind of scripts need to be really spot on. Both the above movies were great attempts, but I think they took themselves too seriously. A good dose of humour like how they do it in Indiana Jones series wudnt have hurt.

But as I said before, Karthikeyaa script wudnt have been sufficient for any of the big heroes.

Jst done with watching Karthikeya movie. There was a good mouth talk and reviews surrounding it and had to give in to the hype. Got tickets for the 1st show with difficulty.

Plot:

An inquisitive medical student, Nikhil, comes across a mystery surrounding a temple during one of his Medical Camps. What is the mystery and his attempts at resolving the same form crux of the story.

1st Half:

Starts off interestingly with a mysterious death and cuts to lighter vein introducing Hero, his friends and the Heroine. Once in a while, the main plot is revisited. Humour is provided by Hero's 2 friends who do a decent job. While the 1st half is decent, the story doesn't really move forward.

2nd Half:

It is here where more of the actual mystery starts to unfold and the history surrounding the same is well depicted. Plot picks up pace with interesting reveals and thrill bits. However, as the movie heads to a climax, it's starts getting a bit predictable. The actual climax itself was a let down of sorts with nothing much happening and the mystery unfolding just like that. A decent 2nd half with interesting parts upto Climax.

Analysis:

After watching the movie, you get a feeling that the plot is almost out of a Byomkesh Bakshi serial/Sherlock Holmes storyline. While tht isn't bad in anyway, it's like a 1Hr Crime mystery plot being made into a 2.5 hr movie. Considering it is a movie, felt the plot shud hav been even more better especially at the climax. However, while most of the small movies play it safe of late with Romcoms and Horcoms, it is commendable that the movie makers went into the Mystery/Thriller genre and came away scoring brownie points. Make no mistake, the same plot with a bigger Hero Wudnt have worked and obviously our measuring scale is different for smaller ones. It works fine as long as we don't expect too much out of it.

Artists:

Nikhil suited well to the role and plays it convincingly. Good to see this talented guy getting some good breaks.

Swathi was as usual looking cute but the bubbly part was missing. Surprisingly she was under utilised with hardly any major role to play. Almost to say her absence wudnt have mattered to the story.

Others - Nikhil's friends did well and had their lil moments. Rao Ramesh was as usual very good. Rest all were good if under utilised. Given the hype given to the police officer, his role is cut short almost as an after thought.

The Good:

- Songs and Background score
- Different Genre & Interesting Storyline
- Use of Comic style depiction for Historical Flashback
- Cheap thrills and comedy in parts

Not so Good:

- Lack of depth and finishing touch to an interesting storyline
- No proper Antagonist
- Weak Climax

Overall:

A welcome change to the usual TFI masala and one time watch.

3.25 out of 5.
