Not just GVK, everyone from GMR, Lanco to JP Associates, everyone is exiting all their unplanned hubristic expansions to reduce the leverage that they had got on their balance sheets over the past many years. GVK okati ani kadhu - Hindalco- Novelis, Tata Steel - Corus, Apollo Tyres - Cooper (they withdrew after the markets kicked their butt), the globally expanding Indian company is a good jingoistic headline to have but it is a good leading indicator to exit a stock when the mgt. makes such moves. | ||

I agree with Filmbuff's posting. The successful indian businesses, GENERALLY will NOT BE that successful in developed nations. Couple of key ingredients for indian businesses success is political connections and bribing, which cann't be used in developed world that freely, so it is MUCH more difficult for these people to replicate their success. | ||

Telecoms is not a cyclical business at all. The business will eventually become profitable, but nowhere near the level needed to justify the acquisition cost. If this were the US GAAP or IFRS, Airtel would have to impair atleast half the cost of acquisition. | ||

I keep travelling to Africa regularly and believe me Airtel money has replaced ATMs. I keep bumping into airtel mangers and they keep harping about how they are making money in Africa but keep investing it back to improve non-existant infrastructure. If by money per connection, you mean ARPU, yes. Slightly more than India voice, but much lower on data ARPU. However, it is running at a much lower EBITDA, never made profit since purchase. Passion veru, professionalism veru...an artisan might be very good at his craft, but he might not be good at running a professional organisation - hiring the right talent, setting the right targets, managing scale, getting the right systems in place, managing HR and unions etc etc. I do accept that they have built very good airports, but again these were in partnership with international airport partners. The hubris arises when you feel that you can replicate the success of your local efforts abroad - you end up overpaying, not doing diligence. GVK is going to sell its Indonesian airports too btw. | ||

Too much asalu . GVK and GMR are well proved companies . Just look at the airports they build . They are passionate business men . Chesina projects takkuve aina well handled. GMR has been successful with Turkey airport ..but it is generating much revenues ..They came out. Maldives project is not GMR fault ...its the govt which with drawn . GVK has beens successful with both bangalore and Mumbai projects. They signed two airports with Indonesia and now the australia project. idi 10 billion dollor project. International acquisitions by Indian companies are usually disasters and have dragged down many companies. The main reason is that most of these companies have come up due to their pairavis, bureaucratic and political connections, chicanery..when they go abroad, they find it impossible to replicate this as they do not have any of these advantages. Whether it be Airtel or GVK or GMR, all their international acquisitions have brought them to their knees literally. Even well known names like Tata Steel have had missteps like with Corus. But as they are a professional company, they have had great success with JLR, Tetley etc. | ||
