Hyderabad: The state government and civic authorities of Vijayawada have a big challenge ahead of them as 25 per cent of city population lives in the slums. According to Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, the city has 111 slums, with 3 lakh populations, out of 11 lakh total populations, living in it. More interestingly, Mangalagiri of VGTM, the epicentre of the proposed capital region has 51 per cent of population living in 35 slums in the town. Around 20 of them are notified as hazardous slums as they are on river bunds and canals. Around 75 per cent of the land is occupied of government, railways and local body. When social status of these slums was checked, it was found that 25 per cent are forward castes. Dr M.C. Das, professor of Management Consultancy, said, âIn view of Vijayawada becoming the capital, the canal bunds and river banks must be immediately cleared of slums. This is in the best interest of people living there. Politicians will not object to it and slum dwellers would be rehabilitated properly.
