Reddit:Ancient Indian Scriptures & Relevance to contemporary life
Yeah - I liked the tone and will get my son to read it - he is taking a course this sem on philosophies of asia - so it will help get an understanding beyond the rituals /beliefs fluff He has read some works of Dayananda saraswati - and could not find much to disagree despite claiming to be an atheist The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Anand_n:Quoting for those who think applying rational thinking and skepticism to scripture is blasphemy
That whole 6 part series is an eye opener to anyone who thinks that scriptures are sacrosanct & shouldn't be questioned. Spend less time trying to be brilliant and more time trying to avoid obvious stupidity. |

Thanks for the link From his article "Ancient Indian Scriptures & relevance to contemporary life" "If you are prepared to study the Upanishads and the Vedas in their purity, in their clarity, without in any way compromising your rational mind, you will find that among the ancient writings, they are the most illuminating, rational, critical and intelligent teachings that I have ever seen in my life or studied in my life.â "the Vedic seers were so skeptical and started everything uncertainly, with great deal of care, doubting, asking questions, believing in the famous technique of âsamvadâ which is the dialogue between the teacher and the taught or rather the taught and the teacher, whichever way you want to put it; then how is it that in later yearsâ¦.why is that in later yearsâ¦.everything became a question of either you accept it or youâre cursed to go to hell? I am trying to say that if you really go back to the Upanishads, the Vedas, the ancient shastras, the approach is thoroughly rational and the search is for an eternal truth which does not reside anywhere else other than in your own Self and also in the world that surrounds the Self." "And I think â and youâll find out why â old, young, able-bodied, clear-minded men and women should at least have a cursory understanding of the great Upanishadic teachings. Why? Because it shows you how to keep your mind absolutely clear and unprejudiced and to begin your search without uncertainty, discuss with the teacher or who you treat like your dearest relative or friend and, step by step, gradually, move towards the understanding of the reality which is hidden behind the illusionary ideas that you have formed about it. Now will this help you practically first? It helps you to learn, to think clearly. Nothing in this world can be done if one cannot think clearly. In fact it takes you away from accepting anything without proof and it also takes you to a state where you think for yourself and find out the essence of your own being." Quoting for those who think applying rational thinking and skepticism to scripture is blasphemy The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |
