Asif Ali fans assault woman for posting negative review of his movie

The News Minute | July 28, 2014 | 07:09 pm IST

Today, watching a new movie has gone to another level; thanks to social media for creating a new breed of movie critics. Even before the end credit rolls in, many of us begin typing a review on whether the movie passed the âpaisa wasoolâ standard.

It is, thus, common to see Facebook walls and Twitter accounts littered with reviews of the movies by those in your friend list. Although these reviews are oneâs personal views, we live in a society that deals, rather cannot deal, with a sensitive temperament. And some can go to any extent to put across what according to them is right.

Seena Raya, a student and short film maker from Thiruvananthapuram, recently posted on Facebook her opinion on Malayalam actor Asif Ali's latest movie, "Hi, I am Tony".

Seena had criticised the movie saying it was not worth the money and apparently also gave away the climax of the film. But the backlash was swift. Seena claims she first received threats via Facebook messages, and later through an anonymous phone call. "The caller said he would deal with me," Seena told the media.

On Monday while the two girls and other male friends were at a restaurant, around 15 people attacked them.

"They came in bikes and autos. One person asked who is Seena Raya and when I replied in the affirmative, I was slapped," Seena says in her police complaint. Later the group assaulted the gang of friends and threatened them with knives.

Thiruvananthapuram police have arrested four people who have been identified by the victims.

Meanwhile Asif Ali fans associations in various districts of Kerala have been posting many messages regarding the issue on Facebook. Asif Ali Fans Association, Attingal says, "Violence is condemnable. But this should serve as a strong message to anyone who gives away the movie's climax."
