rao garu, you can't install real hardwood in basement especially the one they install with nails. engineered hardwood with infloor heating is fine. Cork has some R value and retains heat. basement finish chesi vundaka pothe, you better get the duct work closest possible to the ground level on the wall. also cold air vents room ki okatanna vachettu plan cheyandi. as long as you have good recirculation, no issues with temp..

Disadvantages
• expense
• time-consuming to install
• swept and damp mopped or cleaned with a wood floor cleaner
• over time it will loose its shine so that means that you have to wax it using a special machine
• slippery, making it a little dangerous to walk on in sock feet. Also, if you do choose the hard woods such as oak, you are going to want to make sure that it is kept waxed so it will maintain its look so this type of wood needs extra special care.
• Unfortunately wood flooring is very vulnerable to humidity and moisture, which can deteriorate the wood. This is why if you need to mop a spill from the floor, or do a general cleaning, make sure that the mop is just damp.
• Wearing certain types of shoes can make walking across the hardwood floor noisy so if you want a home without much noise, then you are going to have the added expense of throw rugs in areas where the noise is the worse.

Great inputs....

My 2 cents...

Get a Free Quote from Home Depot and shop around to beat their material price and installation price. (If you are going with Home dept you will get 1-2Yrs installation warranty)

Disadvantages: hardwood on 2nd floor can generate tremendous noise, if the sub structure is on a wood beams and concrete mix. (Ppl please share your experience)
EX: High Heels or hard shoes tho walking or tapping chesthey ....tht noise can spread over to all the adjacent rooms. Few new building codes were added regarding this issue. (talk to your installer about this issue)

Alternatives: install thicker #10 padding with avg carpet will give you great comfort. OR
Install Linoleum flooring which look like wood (this depends on your floor slope and grade)

Naa experience. Oka 7 years ago motham two floors lo vunna carpet/laminate peekinchi natural oak 4.5" wide di install cheyinchanu. I think wood about $6.5 per sq ft and installation ki $3 per sq ft ayindi anukunta. Bathrooms, laundry room, entry area emo tiles veyincham. Ika basement finish chesa 4 years ago. I installed cork flooring, nene chesa. I spent about $7 per sq.ft. Installation is not that difficult with cork flooring, all you need is a mitre saw & a bench saw. Whole basement I finished flooring in a day and half. In fact naaku first hardwood flooring vesinappudu idea ledu, otherwise cork vese vadini whole house.

Engineered hardwood is also very good, chaala varieties vachayi ippudu. They are sometimes more expensive and definitely more durable than real hard wood.

Gotcha:

Laminate- no you cannot repolish
Engineered - i think once
Solid- multiple times.

They do just buff only and refinish for cheap which is good enough for removing not so deep scratches.

brazilian cherry,
BRAZILIAN WALNUT
Brazilian Koa

bamboo versions also nice looking

these are my choices, try in lumber liquidators or craigs list, first find out how much area you need, do some research hardwood flooring grades and quality, buy it, lowes and home depot are expensive..

next find out exp handy manny, cheap lo dead seap lo manchi hardwood flooring ayipothadi..

Hope this helps-
1. Decide on which type you want to do- brazillian cherry, Oak, etc.
2. Which style you want= Prefinished (engineered, laminate, solid). These will be all done and will be on the shelf to buy(home depot, lumber liquidators is cheaper place). You can buy and install with the help of a contractor. The problem with these is they cannot be polished again mostly and will have groves in between the planks as they dont mate well.
3. Which style you want= Solid at home finish. In this case they will install the raw wood at home, they will grind and polish the would evenly and then they will finish them. You will not see any kind of groves in between as everything is finished. You can polish them multiple times later if you ever want to get that new look. Down side is they will be expensive - for Oak I paid only 7 bucks per SQFT. For brazillian cherry it will be like 11$.
4. In wood types- itself there are classes- select, grad A - B etc depending on how many defects on the wood. Select is the best.
4. Contractor- craigslist is the best place to find cheap guys. There are bunch of people who work at home depot etc they do it as side business. But find somebody with license and bonded only. Get quotes from 2-3 people.

If you are going with solid at home finish then during the grinding and polishing a ton of dust will spread all over home. Usually they get big vacuum and clean it up- but no way you can stay at home while they are doing the polish. Usually its best to get it done while moving into the home (I did it when i bought the home)
Pedda research kotta when I did it and learned a lot of stuff about it- so ping me if you need any info.

NJ area lo installation itself is $5/sqft. The hardwood cost is separate. Ir ranges from $3 for cheap hardwood to something like $15 for Brazilian teak. Hardwood width batti prices marathayi. The wider the more expensive. I like 4 or 5 inch hardwood.

Check here for sample prices - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/s/solid-hardwood-floorin g/_/N-lfmvZlfmw/Ne-lfmn/Ns-Price%7C1?PIPELINE_SESSION_ID=8e5 2f9b60ad4af292684b0740d715a46&WT.ad=SUBNAV_TopRated_Solid

I got it done at my home; Brazillian cherry is the best- however dont go to brick and motor stores. Check on the local craigslist for hardwood contractors. They quote by the SQFT for "select" & lower classes. You should go for select. Also dont do prefinished hardwood unless budget is tight. The groves in between will cause lot of trouble with dust setting in them later. Best bang for buck is to do raw wood first, polish them and stain them. The total process will take around 3 days and lot of dust will be there so plan to be out of home. Once everything is done it completely changes complexion of any room. It cost me around 7$ per SQFT after haggling and whining with 3-4 contractors and got a weirdo russian do it. He did a bang of a job though.
