Telangana government’s decision to revisit land allotments and protecting it from encroachments a couple of days ago, the exercise to protect Bhoodan land allotted to different organizations is likely to begin from Ranga Reddy district soon.

Huge tracts of prime Bhoodan land had been allotted to various organizations, including central government agencies, by the previous government. Official sources said there are about 21,900 acres of Bhoodan land in Ranga Reddy district, especially in mandals like Ibrahimpatnam, Hayatnagar, Medchal, Yacharam and Kandukur. About 4,300 acres is available in Ibrahimpatnam mandal alone. The district administration has already collected information on the land allotments made, beneficiary organizations, lands left vacant and those that are useful for cultivation.

The RR district administration had allotted 600 acres at Bagath village in Ibrahimpatnam to the National Security Guards (NSG) to set up its regional centre. Another 570 acres were given to Octopus, the elite anti-terrorist force, for setting up its commando training centre.

“The feasibility report for allotting 400 acres to National Police Academy, 600 acres to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and 50 acres to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Ibrahimpatnam mandal was sent to the state government last year. Award enquiry for the NPA land has begun and it will be reclaimed from the assignees, “said KV Upender Reddy, tahsildar of Ibrahimpatnam.

Apart from the allotments made to different organizations, about 2,000 acres of land has been encroached upon over the past few decades. Interestingly, the land allottees, especially in Maheshwaram, Medchal and Ibrahimpatnam mandals, converted their land into plots and made money during the real estate boom. As per rules, Bhoodan land cannot be sold, transferred or utilized for any other purpose than what it was meant for.

Sources said that in 2010, the then revenue minister Dharmana Prasada Rao held a review meeting following which it was decided to reclaim Bhoodan and re-distribute to the landless poor. However, it was not taken up later. “The state government has not given any guidelines on Bhoodan land so far. Once we get instructions, the district administration will take up measures to protect the land, “says Ranga Reddy joint collector Champalal.
