Just now checked price from Hyderabad to chennai on chennai express From 2001 to 2005 ..we did frequent service. Price was 242 Now price is 350 Absolutely ridiculous ...salaries, inflation tripled from 2001...but train fare not even doubled. Just 50%. | ||

Perfectly valid, in the last 10 years fares have hardly increased...only since FY2013 under severe fiscal pressure they have started some small increases, how can modernise railways without even minimal increases. A second class ticket between Hyd and Bangalore, on an inflation adjusted basis must be costing less than half of what it costed in 2004. Tilak - to your point of using other avenues of generating revenues, it is not an either-or. Let's do both so that revenues can be generated. How will you fund all your so called high speed trains and bullet trains with so much subsidies. This will also help in minimising familiar issue of cross subsidising passenger fares by higher freight charges which is another bane of railway budgeting in India. | ||

Even I too dont mind a hike. But Railways, internally, has hell lot of avenues to generate revenues. They, without using those, always resort to hiking fares. Totally unacceptable to me!! Exactly.
