Drought times to repeat again in Chandrababu's reign?

Chandrababu Naidu may be known for his administrative skills and for his tech nerdiness but he has a distinction for being bad omen when it comes to farming community and rains!

His ten years tenure has seen many seasons of drought and it is no exaggeration to say that there were drought ministers those days and porridge centers. Not to forget are the rainwater harvesting pits that sprung up everywhere! With Naidu taking over as CM the time seems to be repeating again. In spite of monsoons arriving in the country, the state has not received its share.

This is because of Chandranna's drought charm said senior Congress leader Botsa Satyanarayana. He recalled the ten years rule and abundant rains received during Congress reign in AP. He recalled that even the rain fed lands too received sufficient rains to grow crops.

Will it rain good or wont it under Chandrababu's term seems to be the discussion among political circles now!

Earlier in the day, speaking to reporters at Ratnagiri, the abode of Lord Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy, the minister said it was decided to provide meals to 5,000 devotees every day at the temples at Simahachalam, Annavaram, Dwaraka Tirumala, Vijayawada, Srikalahasti, Srisailam and Kanipakam under the Nityannadanam scheme. During the Congress rule, common people had faced several problems in having darshan at all major temples, Manikyala Rao said and added that the state government headed by the TDP would give priority to the common devotees. VIP darshans had increased during the Congress government, he pointed out.

Meanwhile, there is little relief from the temperature in the region Saturday. According to the chief planning officers of the respective districts, the mercury levels hovered between 40 to 41 degrees in the region Saturday.

Severe heat wave conditions have claimed as many as 169 lives in Andhra Pradesh so far this summer, the state government confirmed on Sunday and announced an ex gratia payment of rupees one lakh each to the kin of victims.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who took stock of the situation in the state, decided to announce the ex gratia, officials said.

The announcement came after Deputy Chief Minister K E Krishna Murthy held a review meeting with the District Collectors and revenue officials and directed them to provide medical treatment to those affected by the heatwave.

The District Collectors will pay the ex gratia after conducting an enquiry. Krishna Murthy also instructed the collectors to take preventive measures and create awareness among the people on how to avoid sunstrokes.

According to official figures, 169 people have died of sunstroke across the state. The highest number of 45 deaths were recorded in Vizianagaram district where the mercury has been hovering around 40-44 degree celsius for the past few days. It is closely followed by East Godavari district where 22 people died of sunstroke.

Krishna district accounted for 22 deaths. The heat wave conditions are likely to continue for two more days across the state.

"Officials will take measures but people should be careful and take precautionary measures," Deputy Chief Minister K E Krishna Murthy said.

It was also decided to pay an additional Rs. 50,000 to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families under the Apathbandhu scheme for medical treatment in case of sunstrokes.
