VISAKHAPATNAM: The city's dreams of housing an English and Foreign Languages University (Eflu) seem to have all but crashed what with the project, which was mooted in 2010, nowhere in sight today. This even as Mallapuram and Rohtak in Kerala and Haryana respectively, are all set to get their Eflu campuses that were mooted around the same time. Former Union HRD minister and Vizag MP D Purandeswari blamed the lack of political will and uncertainty arising out of the bifurcation issue for the Vizag campus coming a cropper. "The matter was referred to the chief minister last year but due to the bifurcation issue, the plans were stalled." According to her, the Kerala and Haryana campuses were now close to becoming a reality because the respective state governments were keen on pushing the project through and promptly allocated land for it, which was not the case with Vizag. The Vizag campus was to be developed on the lines of the existing campus in Hyderabad, which offers English, Spanish, German and French, apart from a Master's course in linguistics. There are some who are worried that Vizag may lose out again, with the focus shifting to the Guntur-Vijayawada belt, given the indications that Andhra Pradesh CM-designate N Chandrababu Naidu might locate the capital there and focus all his energies in that belt. "Today Vijayawada is being hailed as a Vidyanagara though it got its first college only in the 1950s. Vizag houses the oldest university in the state, the Andhra University, that was set up in 1925," said K V Narayana (name changed), a former consultant who worked with the united AP government. However, a senior BJP leader said their priority was to get as many educational institutions to Vizag as possible so that it could become a higher education hub. "Even though the priority as of now is to get an IIT, IIM and Central University, we will definitely take up the issue of Eflu with the HRD ministry soon. We will also coordinate with the TDP government so that once the lands are earmarked, we can push the proposals through." Needless to say, the student community is not too happy with the manner in which Vizag has been by-passed for other cities in the last five years. "Vizag and the north coastal Andhra region were completely ignored in the last 10 years. Unless we put up a fight, Vizag may lose out on institutions such as Eflu yet again to other cities," said Adari Kishore Kumar, who was the convener of the Samaikyandhra Students JAC. Members of the academia too are miffed with the step-motherly treatment being meted out to the city. "Vizag was a hub for institutions and the educational capital of the Andhra region. But today it is being pointedly ignored despite the potential and resources available.
