When was she put on pedestal to fall from it? God of small things was her first & in most probability her last one. It was a remarkable marketing campaign that Pankaj Mishra from harper Collins ran for her on the behest of Prannoy Roy so don't mistake her to be some self made author. She just lucked out by having the right contacts and was willing to write about India how the west wants to consume it. Without the Man Booker you or me wouldn't have even touched this bile of a book. | ||

Many writers have covered similar topics as dalit politics, communisim etc and i have no issues with that, those are within a fictional context. As Roger Ebert said - "It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it". Similarly for me, i rarely try to judge (in fiction) 'what' a writer writes about, but only how he or she writes it. Of course within non-fiction, no such distinction arises as it is ultimately an opinion piece. The problem with Roy was that it became an overarching passion for and clouded her own judgement and reasoning and has become a joke now. Her fall from grace was remarkable. | ||

How can you not see where she is coming from after reading the book? You've a dalit angle, you've failed marriages because of parental pressure & to boot a communist angle too. Of all the characters only the dalit communist has morals and everyone else are shown to be more grey than white. And the end to boot has lesbianism too. Book is exactly how the west wants to see India as and they conveniently celebrated it. | ||
