They say that an outsider and a minority candidate was deliberately handpicked for this predominantly majority area to ensure the victory of G Kishan Reddy, BJP's lone sitting legislator in the state. But, why should YSR bat for the BJP? The Congress detractors allege that the answer lies in the close friendship the CM shares with cash-rich BJP leader from Bellary, Gali Janardhan Reddy, in neighbouring Karnataka. The BJP leader, with a huge mining business spread out considerably even in Andhra Pradesh, has prevailed upon the Congress to put up a weak candidate from the Amberpet assembly constituency, they say. "Because of this leader, the Congress has fielded Fareeduddin from Amberpet. Being an outsider (from Medak district) and a Muslim, Fareeduddin has little chance of winning from the Hindu-dominated seat," Congress sources said. G Kishan Reddy, on his part, laughs off the "new angle'' to the Congress candidate selection. "YSR is trying very hard to beat me. After all, I talk the most in the assembly, after Naidu. It is most unlikely for him (YSR) to support me. I am his number one critic in the assembly,'' he says, adding that the Congress candidate is "strong'' and that he will have to work hard to win this election. Another analysis about Congress "supporting'' Kishan Reddy is that the party wants to keep a check on MIM's popularity in the Old City. Nevertheless, two Congress MPs from the state have now gone ahead and complained to the Congress `high command' how the BJP miner's money is flowing into the party, tilting decisions. Sonia Gandhi had incidentally levelled this allegation at the BJP government in Karnataka when she kicked off the party's national campaign from that state a few days ago. According to the miffed MPs, Gali Janardhan Reddy has influenced the selection of a few candidates in Andhra Pradesh. "In the Rayalaseema region, he has apparently taken up on himself the entire campaign expense for each candidate,'' says a source. The Congress candidates fielded from the border constituencies of Anantapur district are said to be the nominees of this BJP minister. Because of his influence, DCC president P Venugopal Reddy was denied a ticket from one of the constituencies, the sources added. Of the two Congress nominees fielded from Anantapur, one is said to be a business partner of the BJP leader while the other is the family member of a senior official in the AP state mining development corporation, said the sources. But this is possibly a small gesture for the business-relation YSR and Janardhan Reddy share. After all, the Karnataka BJP minister owns Brahmani Steels in Kadapa, YSR's hometown where he was reportedly allotted 17,000 acres of land in May, 2007 to set up a Rs 25,000-crore steel plant at less than the market price. | ||
