Professor teaches a political lesson to Vijayamma VISAKHAPATNAM: Until 10.15 am on Friday morning, there was little doubt in the minds of the people milling around the counting centres about the winner of the Vizag parliamentary constituency. So when the first round result was announced, putting the candidate with the lotus symbol at the forefront, those gathered were left flabbergasted. The second round results only drove home the fact that the battle for the prestigious Vizag Lok Sabha seat was indeed headed for a mighty upset. As the rounds progressed, YSR Congress leaders and cadre were left rubbing their eyes in disbelief and equally surprised BJP cadre were seen celebrating the fact that their Seemandhra unit president, Kambhampati Hari Babu, was on his way to creating history by overthrowing none other than YS Vijayalakshmi, YSRCP's honorary president and wife of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. As a BJP leader close to Hari Babu confessed, even the man himself had not imagined in his wildest dreams that he would trump Vijayamma by a margin of over 70,000 votes. Equally flummoxed was the man on the street, despite the saffron wave sweeping through the country. "Is it true Hari Babu is winning? Looks like everybody took money from Vijayamma and voted for Hari Babu," said a surprised auto driver ferrying commuters from Peda Waltair to RTC Complex. Having made Vizag his home for more than four decades, Hari Babu is a PhD from Andhra University, where he later served as an associate professor. In fact, he is known to be close to senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu as both of them were student leaders at AU during the agitations spearheaded by Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan in the mid 1970s. Reacting to his victory, Hari Babu said, "New and young voters constitute 30% of the electorate and they expressed confidence in my candidature. Vizag voters not only wanted a local candidate to win so that he is available in the constituency, but they also thought that in the event of Modi becoming PM, electing a BJP candidate would help resolve Vizag-related issues. They also voted for Vizag city to be peaceful after the elections." Elected as an MLA in 1999 from Visakhapatnam-I constituency, Hari Babu was among the key leaders who stressed on packages from the Centre for Seemandhra when the bifurcation process was underway in Parliament, said sources. Terming Hari Babu's victory as one of the major upsets in AP, a BJP leader said: "The people of Vizag were tired of outsiders coming to the city and using it only as their winning horse. But many party activists were quite unsure if he could win the polls considering that he doesn't have a mass reach. The TDP leaders were crucial for us to win this seat as they campaigned extensively." Analysts too expressed surprise. "Though this is an indication of people voting for development, clearly the youth and the Modi factor have swung votes in his favour. But nobody expected that there would be such a large swing of votes," said a political analyst. But some in this cosmopolitan city said they plumped for Hari Babu because Vijayamma knew no language other than Telugu.
