Yeah - we've had some discussions wrt to patterns, frames of reference, empathy, mirror neurons .. The metaphors part was interesting and made some thoughts fall into place The no rationality sans emotion part brought the last manasu/ mind/ heart discussion to mind .. This lecture was at some sustainability conference so he talks more about how to appeal to the conservative framework - found that interesting too Zingthing:
Lol - rarely discuss this stuff in those groups - so they were probably surprised i just found the reaction funny The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Anand_n:
finished 5 parts of the lecture.. very interesting session.. some concepts appeared surprisingly obvious once they were explained for a while I was also thinking in the lines of "Frames",ofcourse i did not the term or was not as clear as it was explained the window. Another dimension added to the concept is linguistics related. I always thought our thoughts were limited by the language.. or atleast language is an indication of our perception and thoughts. Coupled with "Frames", it is bringing out some new explanations, which now i feel are obvious i had to start back from the first video after i finished the third.. now stopped after 5th.. want to listen all 5 parts again to move to sixth the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |

Just keeping the thread alive with an anecdote - I was at a motivational session for kids with some parents - mostly desi the instructor had a question for us- if you had unlimited access to the best library what would you study ? people here probably know my answer - philosophy & neuroscience - but i saw eyebrows go up in that parent group The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

This. Is there a non-medically differentiating explanation between unconscious and sub-conscious? Because an anesthesiologist would laugh at this statement. |

Almost done listening to this lecture from George Lakoff, one of the authors of this book.Definitely worth the hour.He connects the mental frameworks, metaphors and morality and then takes it to economic, ecological and political positions Pt 1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T46bSyh0xc0 Pt.2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7piNmK-H55Y Pt.3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkpcvH7x1aY Pt.4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AEUfOBrVHo Pt.5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN0ZYJOLcvQ Pt.6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wt18IXDm1U The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

For Anand and others whoever interested... looks like a very good read....conforms to physicalist view . http://www.amazon.com/Philosophy-Flesh-Embodied-Challenge-We stern/dp/0465056741 http://www.nytimes.com/books/first/l/lakoff-philosophy.html The mind is inherently embodied. Thought is mostly unconscious. Abstract concepts are largely metaphorical. |
