from jai google talli 1) Upasangrahan: Upasangrahan is one form of showing respect to elders. it is touching the feet of elders or teachers while doing Prostration. (i) Manu Smiriti, Chapter 2, Verses 71 & 72: 'brahmarambhe.avasane ca padau grahyau guroh sada | samhatya hastavadhyeyam sa hi brahmanjalih smritah ||' At the beginning and at the end of (a lesson in the) Veda he must always clasp both the feet of his teacher, (and) he must study, joining his hands; that is called the Brahmangali (joining the palms for the sake of the Veda). 'vyatyastapanina karyamUPASANGRAHANAM guroh | savyena savyah sprashtavyo dakshinena ca dakshinah ||' With crossed hands he must clasp (the feet) of the teacher, and touch the left (foot) with his left (hand), the right (foot) with his right (hand). (ii) Mahabharata, Adi Parva, Chapter 183, Verses 4 & 5: 4 ततॠऽबरवà¥à¤¦ वासà¥à¤¦à¥à¤µà¥ ऽà¤à¤¿à¤à¤®à¥à¤¯; à¤à¥à¤¨à¥à¤¤à¥à¤¸à¥à¤¤à¤ धरà¥à¤®à¤à¥à¤¤à¤¾à¤ वरिषà¥à¤à¤¹à¥à¤® à¤à¥à¤·à¥à¤£à¥ ऽहम à¤

à¤à¥à¤¹à¥à¤£à¤¤à¤¾à¤ à¤à¤¾à¤°à¤¤à¤®à¥à¤à¥à¤¯à¤ªà¤¾à¤¦à¥ Vasudeva approaching that foremost of virtuous men--the son of Kunti--and touching the feet of that prince of the Ajamida race, said, 'I am Krishna.' And the son of Rohini (Valadeva) also approaching Yudhishthira, did the same. And the Pandavas, beholding Krishna and Valadeva, began to express great delight. And, O thou foremost of the Bharata race, those heroes of the Yadu race thereafter touched also the feet of Kunti, their father's sister. 2) Abhivaadana: http://vediclessons.blogspot.in/2007/12/... We prostrate before our parents, elders, teachers and noble souls by touching their feet. The elder in turn blesses us by placing his or her hand on or over our heads. Prostration is done daily, when we meet elders and particularly on important occasions like the beginning of a new task, birthdays, festivals etc. Man stands on his feet. Touching the feet in prostration is a sign of respect for the age, maturity, nobility and divinity that our elders personify. It symbolizes our recognition of their selfless love for us and the sacrifices they have done for our welfare. It is a way of humbly acknowledging the greatness of another. The good wishes (Sankalpa) and blessings (aashirvaada) of elders are highly valued in India. We prostrate to seek them. Good thoughts create positive vibrations. Good wishes springing from a heart full of love, divinity and nobility have a tremendous strength. When we prostrate with humility and respect, we invoke the good wishes and blessings of elders, which flow in the form of positive energy to envelop us. The different forms of showing respect are : (i) Pratuthana: Rising to welcome a person - Literally 'rising from one's seat to welcome a visitor; respectful salutation'. This is how one shows respect to a guest, or any elderly person. (ii) Namaskaara: Paying homage in the form of namaste - Literally 'adoration, homage'. This form of abhivadana involves joining one's palms and bowing slightly from the waist. 'Namaste' literally means 'Nahamste' (I am not here). This is the complete refusal of one's ego when greeting a fellow being. (iii) Upasangrahan: Touching the feet of elders or teachers - Literally 'respectful salutation by embracing the feet'. This form of abhivadana is for a guru or any other respected person. Amongst Hindus, the relationship between a student and his guru is very sacred. The guru is the most important entity in a student's life and is greeted even before the gods. This is because the guru Joined palms and a slight bow from theist constitute a namaskara. Prepares a student for life by teaching him everything he will need to know to live in society. Upasangrahan is performed on specific occasions to one's guru, parents, or other important relations. (iv) Shaashtaanga: Prostrating fully with the feet, knees, stomach, chest, forehead and arms touching the ground in front of the elder. Shashtanga is the most reverentialand solemn form of greeting.lies flat on the ground on his stomach, with his arms extended beyond his head, and then clasps the feet of the person being greeted. It is called Shashtanga because six parts of the body touch the ground: the feet, knees, stomach, chest, forehead, and arms. (v) Pratyabivaadana: Returning a greeting - Returning a salutation is an integral part of greeting. It was said that a person who did not know how to return a greeting should not be saluted, no matter how learned he may be. The Dharmasutras (see Sutra) give detailed descriptions on how to acknowledge a greeting. The usual reply was Ayushman Bhava, meaning "May you have a long life". Seinfeld In our culture, husband is older to wife...so it is believed that he is more knowledgeable than wife, hence wife touches the feet of husband for blessing. |
