Kids naturally pick up things from their parents. I read a lot, so naturally my elder one (younger still speaks gibberish) picked that up and can read for 4-5 hours at a stretch. They show no inclination towards tablets. I don't get any kids channels at home barring some old recorded programs. I see my brother's kids read the Harry Potter books age 7. I wonder whether my kids will reach that stage that quick. Anything beyond 15-20 pages is beyond their current attention span. But compared to other kids here her reading is quite good and advanced but not compared to US levels. Once reading falls in place, many of the others come easy - like spelling, comprehension etc. I am somehow observing that US levels of Mathematics too is higher than India, at least at this age. My bro's kids do double digit multiplication by 7, here they have not even started tables.... Kids, i feel, should be taught only the value of education and hardwork. They will learn the rest by themselves. | ||

If they get stuck on a question i explain/teach the concepts ... But i don't check their homework answers after they complete it .. Depends on the kids and how much risk you are willing to take ...I have not checked my kids homework after they do it .. I just teach them the concepts, if that, and let them run with it They lose some points on the grade and learn to correct their mistakes and be more careful next time So they may not be at the top of their class all the time - and I am ok with that I have said kids need to choose what they want to do/read and many here scoffed at the idea of a 4-5 year old choosing what to read..8 years later I can say it worked for my boys.. Whether it was my older one reading 4 volumes of Harry Potter by the time he was 8 or the little one racing thru the Percy Jackson series or the Cirque du freak series I cringed at - reading what they liked kept them reading Everything else becomes easy ...never had to make them memorize spellings As to technology - it is good for learning tips and tricks but not to build a love of reading and good stories - my two cents The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim | ||

my personal opinion.... tasks in priority 1. earn your kid's trust. Love is unconditional. But trust is not. 2. create a "party pad" for your kid. show your kid how to have fun. 3. send your kid to a very good school. Let the teachers and peers do the heavy work. 4. start giving your kid ownership at home. | ||

just to give different perspective... my daughter is totally into digital learning. Lots of kids TV, unlimited access to internet, iPad and all gadgets. She is in 5th grade and straight A grades in all subjects. Always in advanced language arts, high math at school. My wife and I teach her everyday religiously. Never been to Kumon. Bottomline, we don't succumb to peer pressure. Give her freedom and let her excel. | ||
