For TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, general elections 2014 are a do or die battle. If at 63, he fails to make a comeback after a decade out of office, the prospects are likely to be bleak five years from now. He is leaving little to chance. He has arrived at a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP after craftily nuanced negotiations to ensure that his party is a force to reckon with in both states after Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation on June 2, and equally respected in Delhi as an influential constituent of the National Democratic Alliance. What is more, the shrewd tactician is continuously striving to make the most of the BJP-TDP alliance. Naidu hopes to capitalise on the growing wave of support for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas, in order to share power in Delhi as an NDA ally, even as he is desperate that his party emerge strongest in a truncated Andhra Pradesh. He is aware that the TDP is up against a formidable rival in the YSR Congress, whose energetic chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is poised to upset the calculations of his well-established rivals in the run-up to the polls. This is a daunting task. There is some discomfort in the TDP rank and file about the degree of closeness with the BJP, though both parties have yielded ground by giving up constituencies and replacing contestants. In contrast, the BJP leadership in Telangana had opposed any truck with the TDP apprehensive of backlash from its own cadres owing to the latter's image as TDP was viewed as a party that had stalled bifurcation as a partner in the NDA government and during the discussions initiated by the UPA. Clearly, there is discontent among the BJP cadres in Telangana and in the TDP ranks in residuary Andhra Pradesh that have to be dealt with before the April 30 and May 7 polls in the two regions if both parties are to make the most of the alliance. |
