Dreamcatcher:

Most of the kids get into trouble in the after-school hours. This is proven in many a case study. So, keeping them off the streets during these hours is critical. Options are,

1. Work with school to keep the gym open (or local YMCA) and encourage kids to participate in sport activities.

2. Work with school to start after-school reading/math activities to help kids who are struggling in these.

I will post more as I think of them.

one-on-one mentoring...this will require plenty of volunteers from the same community. kids will connect with someone who can understand what they face in their day-to-day lives. these mentors will meet the assigned kid at least twice a week for at least couple of hours each visit. the volunteer is to make sure kid is not skipping school, guide them properly to resolve their issues at school, guide them in academics where kid is struggling. this has worked wonders already in many crime affected schools.

vunkl,

I feel kids need inspiration and role models. that influence pays a major part in this confusing warald.

Especially in teenage, kids influence ayyedhi other than role models, peers kalisi chese activities valla.

teens ni community activities lo involve cheyagaligithe, they might pick a more responsible role. its hard for one person to come of out of the mould, but as a group involve cheyagaligithe konchem vz ani naa idhi..

it takes a lot of effort, cheppinantha vz kaadhi.

annai as promised... this is the topic of the day for you... if interests you.....

last weekend, I met a young lady who is the principal of a high school of 900 students. school is a innercity school....... heavy poverty and crime.....

the graduation rate of the school is shocking 24%...... out of the 24% graduates.... less than 30% apply for college... (all grads are eligible for 100% aid in the state)

this principal is niece of my mentor......

so tell me what can WE do to help this failing students graduate..... 90% of the students in the high school have 3rd grade or lower reading skills.....
