I would not be too surprised. When IBN went in for an IPO, i remember calculating the worth of his shares, it was over 50-60 crores. But now there have been multiple changes in the corporate structure at Network 18, not sure what their networth is now. But it is not an unreasonable number. Paying 5 cr to Arnab or folks like Udayan Mukherjee it totally worth it, they are single handedly driving their channels. But of late, IBN bagane untondhi - they are taking a reasonable slant, Rajdeep does not shout down his guests and pass his own judgement on things. Comes across as quite refreshing after watching Times Now.. | ||

I grew up reading Express but around my 8th class got hooked to sportstar and the love for hindu started from there. Even today I wait for Nirmal Shekar's pieces. I guess in those days rohit brijnaths' column used to be syndicated in Hindu. Never looked back and even today I enjoy their young world supplement. Every newspaper has an agenda but that shouldn't bind them in how they deliver the news to it's readers and rightly as buffy said off late Hindu has crossed the line. Lead pieces should have a right mix of all the voices so that the reader can make his own opinion after hearing from all the sides but off late their is only voice and that is to save the secular fabric of the country. | ||

i started with the HIndu...it was wonderful reading science and tech, sunday editions and fcuk the sports columns...damn good ...kallaki kattinattu raasevadu more than anything i liked their english vocabulary...i give The Hindu credit to whatever english knowledge i have...even minor things like Art Buchwald syndicated column were a delight coming to IE i started reading it when I was 13-14 yrs... there were good investigative pieces and their editorials were a nice read...sadly after 2004 did not read these papers regularly | ||

IPC - the indian express was broken up into two after the death of ramnath goenka. Ramnath goenka had left his estate to his grandson - vivek goenka. There was a long litigation between vivek and the son in law - manoj sonthalia and finally vivek got indian express, financial express, screen etc. while manoj got the south editions of the indian express under the new indian express brand. I grew up with the investigative journalism of indian express. I still remember the daily exposes of shourie, the articles of ram jethmalani on the bofors issues etc.. Naa blood lo kalisipoyindi. Even in delhi i am getting the Hindu at nearly 8 rs per day. I have also been thinking of moving away from the newspaper. Almost every day he has some open letter written by his definition of intellectuals appealing to their definition of secular and snycretic India. I am pained by their overt pandering to the leftist brigade. Every newspaper is entitled to their political stance but not at the cost of honesty and clear presentation of facts. I am a clear liberal - i read the guardian and nytimes regularly but there is a fine line between being left of centre and being a closet Commie. I am afraid the Hindu is crossing the line. Espouse some strong leftist causes - wages, unions, rights of the poor and backward etc like the dems and labour party do. Hindu has fallen into the trap of the Indian left- virulent opposition of the US being the cornerstone of their agenda. Tilak - i understand the exit of SV was because he was giving equal coverage to Modi and the others much to the annoyance of Ram and family. There was an article i read on this in Caravan or somewhere. The Hindu is still an important newspaper - it can still aspire to continued relevance like the nytimes or the guardian. The voice of the left is an important part of democratic literature and reporting. | ||
