So, what does Jessica Alba have to do with Hrudaya Kaaleyam? Apparently something. Maybe she had inspired Sai Rajesh Neelam, the director and producer of this movie, to think about making a mark in the tinsel town. There are movies where the first scene is supremely important and you have to watch the movie from the titles onwards. Then there are movies where the first one hour does not make any sense at all and you can as well walk into the auditorium during the "interval". And there is Hrudaya Kaaleyam, where even the "We thank our media partners, friends and family" series of slides that precede the titles are important if you don't want to miss some really genuine gags. Most people don't read the content on those scenes carefully. They don't know what they are missing! Hrudaya Kaaleyam belongs to an interesting genre, one that has not been fully explored in Telugu industry till now. It is a parody. No, it is a comedy. No I stand corrected, it is a full fledged drama where parody is the underlying theme. When I say "Parody", it is about celebrating the cliches normally found in a Telugu movie screenplay. It doesn't correspond to any specific situation or movie like most parody genre movies do. This movie takes itself completely seriously. That is a welcome change! The characters do not act stupid. They truly believe in what they are doing and do it with utmost conviction. The hilarity is generated strictly in the viewer's perspective - based on the Telugu movie conditioning that the viewer has undergone since his or her childhood. The dialogues by themselves, taken out of context, are pretty serious. But Sai Rajesh depends heavily on our intelligence (or the lack there of) to interpret it humorously. That is, in my opinion, the USP of this movie. Most parody movies try to generate humor by asking their characters to act unnaturally. Not in this case. Context plays an important role here. If you show this movie to someone who has not seen any Telugu mass movie so far, chances are he would find it really bland and serious. While most scenes are right in your face, there are some really subtle atmospheric stuff that send you rolling on the floor laughing. Watch out for the innovative viewer discretion warnings that come up from time to time on the scenes. (Such as : Getting drenched in rain is injurious to health). They are mostly "blink-and-you-miss-it" stuff but add tremendous value to your experience. It would have been nice to see more such gags - something that Hollywood comedies routinely do where things happening in the background unrelated to the main theme generate a lot of humor. However, Hrudaya Kaaleyam is a step in the right direction. It nearly gets it perfect. It is not just a series of gags though. It has a solid story and no unrelated comedy tracks. It does get emotional towards the second half and in a bizarre sequence right at the end, it actually becomes really serious. Till then, you are laughing every time Sampoo appears on the screen. But there, in the climax, you see the absolute determination in his eyes that stops your smile and you start rooting for him genuinely. Sampoo has just morphed into a regular mass hero in your mind. Sampoo, short for Sampoornesh Babu is the on screen hero of this movie. He has the right physique! and a voice that reminds you of Gabbar Singh in Sholay. Watch out for his surprisingly agile dance movements. The heroines are adequate. The real hero of the movie though is Sai Rajesh. His writing is the soul of the movie. He even manages to provide a perfectly logical explanation for the weird title of this movie. Hrudaya Kaaleyam is not without its shortcomings though. The second half seems a bit stretched and the pre-climax episodes are a little jarring even for this genre. There is apparently a "Trunk Road" somewhere in the Cyberabad police station jurisdiction! And I haven't been able to connect the "Kidney" found in the tagline of this movie to the "Heart" or the "Liver". But all these get swept away in the tsunami of hilarity that the movie generates. Sai Rajesh, Sampoo are here to stay. Let us welcome them to the industry. My rating: Must watch in a mass theatre. Skip the multiplexes. I watched it in INOX but felt the experience would have been much better in Saptagiri, RTC X Roads, Hyderabad. Naaku nacchindi janaalaki nacchadu... Janaalaki nacchindi naaku nacchadu...
