if your ameritrade profile like name, ssn, status doesnt match with IRS records then irs will ask your broker to withhold 28% of your portfolio. |

I just called ameritrade customer care.. apparently there is some sorta foreign conversion restriction on my account. adi change cheyataniki, they asked me to send W-9, signed letter stating the date I became US tax payer and copy of US permanent residence card or alien registration visa. But I'm neither of that - I'm on H1B visa. Are you citizen or are you also on h1b? |

When I sell stocks, ameritrade is charging taxes on total amount instead of profits only. For ex, I bought stocks for $100 and I sold them when they reached $120. Now, instead of taxing the profit - $20, they are withholding 28% taxes on the total amount - $120. So I end up with only $75 in my account. Of course I get the remaining amount during tax returns but I end up with only $75 to play with for the remainder of the year.. Is it the same for everyone or am I missing something? What should I do so that my broker only charges taxes on profit or doesn't withhold any money and leave it for me to handle with IRS? thanks |
