Heart of Any Android Application is the Android Manifest file. It is very similar to web.xml in J2EE Web Applications or ejb-jar.xml in J2EE Enterprise Applications. Most important declarations in the Android Manifest file are - Activities, Services, providers and receivers, apart from other general feature-usabiility, permissions, version declarations. Intents are another important feature of Android. They are the messaging protocol between the four different types of components. The Android App execution environment is DalvikVM. Every App launched starts within it's own process in the GNU based Kernel. Except for Activities, the rest four can be declared to execute as an independent process of their own. Overall Application Design and Architecture has to mandate the necessity carefully. Messaging protocols have to be handled carefully, in a multi-threaded environment if need be. The single most important factor in designing an Android Application, as against a Web Application, is that the mobile app is primarily Single-Threaded. Providers and Receivers are least used. Services are not declared unless they are mandatory. Activities, View Hierarchy and Intents is the most important component. It is what runs the basic life-cycle and presents something for display. java.net packages are available for data interaction with backend systems and data servers, over-the-air. iOS is also not too different.
