COURTHOUSE — Defense attorneys for alleged killer Raghunandan Yandamuri filed a motion Thursday to have all photographic evidence of bodies and the crime scenes in the murder case against their client reduced to grayscale.

“The commonwealth is in possession of numerous inflammatory photographs and the inflammatory nature of these photographs is due to their presentation in color, instead of black and white,” the motion reads.

The motion states there are several photos of the two crime scenes which show excessively graphic images of the deceased that depict the severity of the injuries of the grandmother and of the baby.

Defense attorneys Stephen Heckman and Henry Hillis would also like to see the photographs prosecutors intend to use to determine the prohibitive value of them. If they do not object to any of the photos, then they would like them to be made black and white.

“Additionally, these photographs deem by the trial court to be potentially admissible should be reduced to black and white to avoid unnecessarily inflaming the passions of the jury,” the motion states.

Heckman and Hillis also filed a second motion that, if granted, would limit prosecutors’ use of computer-generated programing in their opening, case-in-chief and closing arguments.

“There exists a great danger of manipulation of evidence shown in an opening statement that would so prejudice the minds of the jurors in such a way as to deny the (defendant’s) right to a fair trial under the United States Constitution and the Pennsylvania Constitution,” the motion reads.

In the motion, the attorneys acknowledge that Pennsylvania case law allows for computer animation, but argues that the tool is usually reserved for “cases that are of such complexity that such evidence is needed to demonstrate and clarify issues for the jury.”

The defense attorneys also stated they are worried juries will go to deliberate with a gory image in their heads and not recollect evidence presented by the defense.

“While certain aspects of these pictures/diagrams may be relevant during trial, the relevancy is reduced during closing arguments and only serves as the prosecution’s way of highlighting the emotional aspects of the case which would unduly inflame the passions of the jury and deny the defendant the right to a fair trial under both the federal and state constitutions.”

Prosecutors will now have to respond to these motions in writing before a ruling can be made.

Yandamuri is accused of the October 2012 killing of 61 year-old Satyavathi Venna and her 10 month-old granddaughter, Saanvi. Prosecutors allege Yandamuri attempted to kidnap Saanvi and in the process, killed her grandmother in a struggle. The district attorney’s office contends he intended to hold the child for ransom to pay back gambling debts.

A tentative trial date for the murder was scheduled for May 5.
