good answer...British did this deliberately...they had Pak -30 mins and Bangla +30 mins of IST so that India can have only 1 time zone....technically Calcutta and Mumbai/Gujarath are 1 hour diff if you consider the longitudes | ||

I was asked this by my ex-boss. Why is it that India is the only major country with such a weird time zone that is at a 30 mins difference from GMT. Most other time zones are either 1,2,3,4 ..hours +/-. We are the only ones which have a time zone that is not a multiple of 1 hour. I did not have an answer - my best MBA response (aka minimal knowledge backed my maximum confidence) answer was that as we did not have 2 time zones (which ideally we should, one for the east and one for the west), like typical Indian democratic solutions, we came to a mid-way and decided to have a 5:30 hour diff from GMT when ideally it should have been 5 hours and 6 hours for the west and east respectively. |
