Mitt Romney got the most expensive political career in America. If Jagan loses, the opportunity cost will be multi-fold higher than that of any politician who ran for a CM position in the country. Mitt Romney: The Most Expensive Political Career In American History This story appears in the October 22, 2012 issue of Forbes. Lots of people pay a high price for getting into politics, but no one has likely given up more, at least financially, than Mitt Romney. His decision to leave Bain Capital to rescue the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and pursue a political career was the most expensive decision of his life. Romney is still plenty rich, worth an estimated $230 million, but had he remained at Bain for the private equity boom he would be worth much more. It’s usually pretty tough to calculate the opportunity cost of one man’s decision. But in Romney’s case it’s a little easier. He left Bain Capital just as the private equity boom was getting going and he was in an excellent position to profit from it. By changing careers, it’s reasonable to estimate the Romney left $1.77 billion on the table. He probably would be worth $2 billion by now. As has been widely reported and repeated by President Barack Obama’s campaign, Securities & Exchange Commission filings show that Romney owned 100% of the general partners of some of Bain’s most important funds, suggesting he possessed overwhelming ownership of the private equity firm he founded. Filings Romney made in Massachusetts that have been unearthed show that he owned 100% of Bain Capital. Nevertheless, in order to keep the very partners who in reality went on to build a successful Bain Capital without him from leaving, Romney would have had to share the wealth and cede much of his ownership. The public filings of private equity firms dominated by one or two men, like TPG and First Reserve, suggest Romney would have ended up with ownership of 30% or so. Most of the other big private equity firms, like the Carlyle Group, Blackstone Group, Apollo Global Management, KKR and Oaktree Capital Management, now trade publicly. Looking at the public market valuations of these firms as a percentage of their assets under management, it’s possible to estimate a valuation for Bain of $5 billion or so based on its $66 billion under management. That would mean that Romney’s stake in the company would be worth $1.5 billion—a guess which is as good as any. Bloomberg recently came to a similar conclusion, estimating Romney’s stake would be worth $1.32 billion, although for different reasons since it valued Bain at $11 billion. By comparison, the market currently values Carlyle, with $156 billion under management, at $8 billion, and Apollo, with $105 billion under management, at $5.5 billion. Still, with $61.5 billion under management, KKR is an outlier and worth $10.5 billion. But Romney’s wealth would not have stopped there. Notwithstanding his rich separation agreement with Bain, he missed out on a decade of the richest performance fees in Bain’s history and the ability to invest more in some of Bain’s most profitable boom era deals. Using the wealth of other billionaire buyout barons as a guide, Romney may very well have accumulated another $500 million. But Romney has consistently shown that he is willing to sacrifice huge sums of money in order to chase his political dreams. He spent $45 million of his own money to finance his 2008 presidential run. And he was ready to give up future fortunes when he ran for the U.S. Senate in 1994. Indeed, given Bain’s success in the 1990s and his lucrative exit package, losing a political campaign to Ted Kennedy may have been the best financial thing that ever happened to Romney. “I went on and did something which I cared very deeply about,” Romney has said. “Because I care about the country.” |

If he didn't leave Congress, he wouldn't have faced all the CBI cases. He could have enjoyed his life as a Central minister. If he didn't leave Congress, he wouldn't have spent 16 months of jail life. He could have doubled his money by now. Why did Jagan leave Congress and what he achieved at the end? Not sure if a person could put so much at stake just for the Chief Minister position. |
