You have seen the promos. You know it is a road movie. You know the heroine gets kidnapped. You can surely put two and two together along with a bit of Stockholm syndrome. By the time the movie starts, you are already thinking of the story’s climax and you have a pretty good idea what is going to happen at the end. And then it all starts unfolding in front of your eyes, exactly the way you envisaged - slowly but methodically, forcefully but excruciatingly silently. You sit there wide-eyed unable to believe that Imtiaz Ali believed in a story so predictable and bland. That’s when the actual conflict point of the movie is introduced to you - quite out of the blue when you least expect it. In a mark of genius, like a landslide, Imtiaz Ali turns it all around and leaves you gasping for breath. Then you realize you’ve been taken for a ride. The movie has a girl who gets kidnapped and starts empathizing with the kidnapper alright. But that’s just superficial detail. The movie is not about those developments. It is all about the girl and who she was, who she is and who she becomes. That pretty much sums up the movie. I used a phrase “excruciatingly silently” and I mean it literally. This is one movie where the loudest background score is actually silence. There is so little of background music that you end up concentrating on the visuals more which are breathtaking to put it mildly. You wonder how beautiful India is. Imtiaz Ali is in no particular hurry. He lets you soak in the atmosphere and become a part of the journey. You end up soul searching along with the girl. When the inevitable happens, you realize that it is not the end of the world. It is not the end of the movie either. Alia Bhat is just brilliant. I haven’t seen “Student of the Year” and so this is the first time I have watched her on the silver screen. She treads the dangerous path carefully taking utmost care not to cross the thin line that separates acting and hamming. She will find it incredibly difficult to surpass or even match her performance in this movie. The entire movie revolves around her character and she carries it on her shoulders with a panache rarely seen in Indian cinema. Randeep Hooda redeems himself after a forgettable string of movies. As a murderous kidnapper thoroughly confused by the onset of Stockholm Syndrome in his captive, he is in his elements. Watch out for his performance in the pre-climax episode. There are a number of scenes in this movie so tastefully written and aesthetically shot. Without revealing much, here are some of them. * Alia Bhat’s first speech after getting kidnapped * Her attempt at running away from the kidnapper * Her child like joy looking at the water gushing by * The climax speech * The dance for the “English” song. The movie is lengthy but you yearn for more. It is like watching the sunset from the top of a hill. You don’t want the sun to hurry. You don’t ask for a comic interlude. You just stay with the sun till he goes down. And you enjoy the silence. Highway is not a feel good movie. It has a very dark theme something that scares the living daylights off you. It is not for the faint hearted. It makes you think about your life and your family. It can potentially change the way you treat the world. If you have the guts to face it, go watch it in a movie hall. The movie demands 100% devotion to it. You can’t get that feel if you watch it at home. Imtiaz Ali - Aap Mahaan Ho.
