Even within India, Bengali is the second most spoken language after Hindi. Telgugu is 3rd and Marathi is 5th. Tamil might be 6th or 7th. Again I am talking within India. This is as per official report. Looks like Bengali includes some other small languages which makes it bigger. Frankly speaking if you really go by linguistic lines (Official Hindi includes other linguistic languages only for some political reasons) Telugu is the biggest spoken Indian languages in India. For example, Rajastani which linguists considered and proved as a language, was considered part of Hindi just for political reasons.
