The student bodys quality started deteriorating from Y2K, the kids were all spread out. For Close to 50 yrs.The cream of cream was there. HPS in those days was not elite at all, there were a lot of Services and rich kids but lots of aam janta like yours truly. And the rest of his academic background is really ho-hum. Atleast 50% in this DB would have a better profile than him. But to succeed and beat so many fiercely competitive peers, many of whom are big tech leaders in their own right, whether politically or through sheer tech genius, is really something. Over a period of 20+ years, there can't be a single misstep to achieve this, one bad year and you end up getting screwed for life. | ||

Well Im sure the Manipal guys must be bragging, it has grown in stature quite a bit over the years. I only knew it to be the chill college town in India. Having an IAS Guy as your father. Education in HPS, Manipal, UW & UChicago. To me this is an exceptionally 'well rounded' profile & conditioning to succeed in the international corporate world. If HPS was not there in the mix, I would have been looking at it difference. HPS in those years was brilliant. I think that a Middle of the Road HPS Student who goes to Manipal would be better at business/org relationships and leadership in US than a VPS, VJA Student who tops EAMCET. | ||

, yeah I knew that, but still. Academically not super distinguished in a studious kind of way but he has a great cocktail of education . some of all his parts gives him a very well rounded profile. HPS with its Elite Student Body & Manipal with its national crowd & international NRI crowd would have given him excellent conditioning. Next some tech conditioning in UW and then business administration conditioning in UC. IMO, that is a distinguished combination. | ||

Nobody knows who (if any) were the external candidates considered and interested. Almost all of the high profile internal candidates (like Sinofsky, Allard, Robbie Bach, J Allard, Muglia, Raikes) left/fired by Ballmer.
