HOWRAH/KOLKATA: Kolktata's reputation on women safety took a beating on Monday yet again when a 21-year-old woman, headed home to Howrah from her workplace at the posh South City Mall in South Kolkata, was abducted by five people from Kidderpore, beaten up, gang-raped and dumped at Babughat, near the Hooghly river. One of the five accused, Mohammad Hamid (21), a resident of Dhakuria's Babubagan, was arrested in the evening. A senior Kolkata Police officer said Hamid had confessed to the crime. "We have cracked the case. We expect to arrest the others in the next few hours," the officer said. The five took turns raping the woman between 10.45pm and 12.30am and dumped her at Babughat around 1am when she pleaded with them to let her go. "Jah, tumko chhor diya (we are letting you go)," they laughed in her face and pushed her on the road. Bleeding profusely and delirious, the woman walked to Howrah station, around 3.5km away, in four hours before she managed to call for help. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee called for strong action against the culprits. "I have directed the administration to arrest the culprits immediately and take stringent action against them. The culprits will not be spared," she said in Siliguri. The government has taken responsibility of the woman's treatment and shifted her to Belle Vue Clinic from a Howrah hospital. The rape survivor is a member of the housekeeping staff for a retail chain at the mall. She told police and doctors that she left around 9.30pm on Sunday. She was waiting for a bus to Howrah when she saw some of her colleagues in a taxi, going towards Park Circus, and hopped inside. She told them she would go to Howrah station after they got off. The cab driver, she said, dropped the others at Park Circus and then took the flyover to Kidderpore. She says the driver dropped her off at a "food stall" near Kidderpore and refused to go any further, saying she would easily get a bus to Howrah. She said she pleaded with the driver to take her to Howrah station, even offering him to pay extra, but he refused. She said a car stopped in front of her a little later and the its occupants offered her a lift. She refused and started to walk away, but suddenly felt someone pulling her inside. Someone held a crude weapon to her temple (it's unclear what the weapon was as she is still delirious) and pushed her inside the car. Her bag and cellphone were snatched. Thereafter, she said, her abductors took a circuitous route, unfamiliar to her. Police officers said it could be the serpentine lanes and bylanes of Watgunje. Here, she was dragged out of the car and raped repeatedly. She said one of them gagged her as the others took turns to rape her. When she came to senses, she found herself in the same car, headed towards Babughat. Her rapists were discussing what to do with her — whether to let her go or finish her off. She pleaded with them to let her go and to let her live. They pushed her out of the car and hurled her bag in her face. She said she still remembered them laughing as their car sped away. The woman said she walked down to Howrah station in pain and could reach by 5am when she called her aunt, just managing to say: "I will die. Please come and save me." Her aunt and uncle — who stay in Sodepur — and mother reached Howrah station around 6.55am to find her waiting in front of the food plaza near platform No. 15, shivering violently. She was taken to a hospital where doctor found physical wounds consistent with rape. The girl's mother registered an FIR with Howrah police. There are some inconsistencies in the woman's statement, but doctors said it could be because of trauma. Howrah's chief medical officer Debasish Roy said: "She had told her mother that she was forced off the car near Howrah station. Given her condition and the mental trauma, she isn't coherent."
