The best thriller in TFI till date is Anukokunda Oka Roju. It keeps your interest alive through out movie and keeps you guessing what happens next and what might have happened the missing night. Songs were integrated as part of story. (SPOILERS for 1) In case of 1, you don't easily connect with Heros issues as the serious issue of heros integration disorder was treated with comic manner and even all characters around him make fun of him. also unnecessary love track. Still I rated first half as best for screenplay and twists. Now coming to second half, there were songs coming in and long chases and unnecessary fights. There were one or two twists which interest you, but again dry down with regular revenge and the actual plot of corporate greed looked really funny. Had the movie ended with Nazareth being killed, I would have rated it highly as its really first of its kind. But, just to showcase Gautham, director has used the sequence of walking miles to home from school but. It really looked like a long walk, almost 15 min walk. Hence the word thriller suits, but griping? A big NO I sure would like to see it again after its trimmed down. Always be yourself. Because an original is worth more than a copy. | ||

DC review Rating: 2.5 '1 Nenokkadine', which hit the theatres on Friday, holds the record for the Telugu film with the highest budget. After delivering three consecutive hits, Mahesh Babu has joined hands with director Sukumar for '1 Nenokkadine'. The film introduces Kriti Sanon. The story goes like this. Gautham (Mahesh) is a popular rock star. He has been suffering from a psychological disorder and is frequently haunted by bad dreams. As a child, he had witnessed the gruesome murder of his parents. Since then, a few strange incidents convince him that killers are on his trail. Unfortunately for him, people around him do not notice any of these strange happenings and they tell him that he is living in his dream world. Journalist Sameera (Kriti) is a welcome entity in Gautham’s life. Whether her investigative journalism helps Gautham trace his parents’ killers or not, Gautham holds great fascination for her. Together they set off on the mystery solving mission. Mahesh’s revenge forms the crux of the story. '1 Nenokkadine' is director Sukumar’s first film with Mahesh Babu. Expectations from Sukumar are very high. In fact, writing is Sukumar’s forte. Somehow he fails to deliver in this film. The story is run of the mill. The film has been shot mostly in the UK, Bangkok and Goa; the locales are captivating. But for a murder-revenge story, the elements of excitement, chills and thrills are missing. The first 10 minutes of the film are good. From then onwards, the director seems to be focusing more on the psychological aspect and it appears that he has forgotten the story line. There are not many characters involved since the story revolves around Mahesh. Also, the film is too long and the entertainment aspect is absent. There are times when the audience’s patience is tested. The saving grace in the movie is Ratnavelu’s cinematography which is excellent. A couple of action scenes have been canned well. There is not much dialogue in the movie and the music is mediocre. Mahesh looks superb, and one can clearly see that he has worked out a lot for this film. His good performance has been in vain since the storyline is rather weak. Kriti Sanon is the next best thing in the film. This debutante has acted like a veteran. For baddies Kelly Dorge, Nasser and Pradeep Rawat, this is just one more film. Another debutante in the film is Mahesh Babu’s son, child artiste Gautham. He has executed his part very well. Sophie Choudhary sizzles in the item song. To say it in a line, the film falls short of expectations and disappoints film goers, especially the fans of Mahesh Babu. | ||

I think this guy nailed it perfectly. Sometimes, there is this feeling of being neither there nor here. You think beyond your usual boundaries, you decide to take a bold next step, but then pull back halfway through. The courage that you felt before suddenly slips away, and you feel that maybe pushing boundaries beyond a certain stage is not good. And then you compromise and tell yourself that what you've done so far is different enough, and that after this, you will follow the usual path. This halfway mark is exactly where Sukumar is stuck with in his latest film, 1-Nenokkadine. It is clear that he wanted to take Mahesh Babu away from his regular love/action stories. He wrote a detailed script with several twists thrown in, and decided to make a dark movie without many commercial elements. He also decided to shoot abroad extensively, and found producers who backed his vision. But then, he fell into his own trap. Let us tell you how. 1-Nenokkadine is the story of Goutham (Mahesh Babu), who goes to a police station and confesses that he has killed three people who have killed his parents. When the police start looking into the story, they find that he was fighting with shadows and has not actually killed anyone. He is taken to a psychiatrist, who says that Goutham suffers from some kind of a mental disorder due to which he imagines that someone has killed his parents and is out to kill them. Were Goutham's parents really killed? Did Goutham kill anyone, or is it all his imagination? How will Goutham find the answers to these questions? These are some of the questions 1-Nenokkadine attempts to answer. Please note that we only said some - the film raises and convincingly answers these and several other questions. Now the question-and-answer part is where Sukumar does well. He brings in several threads, and ties them all up in a pretty convincing fashion towards the end. There is a sophistication in the treatment of the script, and an extremely multi-layered screenplay that we do not find in Telugu movies in general. You really have to follow the movie to understand what is happening and where it is leading to. Further, there are no separate comedy tracks, and most of the comedy is situational and laugh-worthy. These are all the good parts. But then, Sukumar's doubts seem to have gotten the better of him at some stage during the long shooting schedule. He puts in four regular songs and one "item" song. He makes Mahesh Babu dance during the songs, something that he is not known to do. He gets Ratnavelu to shoot some superb visuals in Goa, London and Belfast, and harps for too long on these visuals and chases in the first half. The chases follow the theme "oh-look-at-all-the-chases-with-the-gorgeous-visuals-we-shot ". These so-called commercial elements make the movie go on for too long. Mahesh Babu puts in an outstanding performance as the vulnerable rockstar. He takes the film's responsibility on his shoulders, and carries it through with his trademark intensity. He dances well enough to send his fans into a tizzy. The heroine, Kriti Sanon, acts well enough, but this thriller needed more pace and less distraction. She is given a significant role in the first half and acquits herself well. The supporting cast of Kelly Dorjee, Pradeep Rawat, Nasser, Sayaji Shinde et al have bit roles, so to speak, and do what they are told. The visuals, like we mentioned earlier, are outstanding. The songs are decent, but the background score is very good and complements the thriller theme of the movie well. The stunts are all well directed, but again, they could have really cut them short. 1-Nenokkadine is a truly different film from your regular Sankranthi entertainer, but it is weighed heavily down by the desire to be different and yet fit in to the commercial mould. If you have to go, do so without being influenced by the hype and hoopla and Mahesh Babu's stardom (if that is possible). | ||

Kudos to Sukumar. It's movie with gripping screenplay that keeps audience guessing the plot all along. I give all the credit to Sukumar. He is one heck of a director who knows what he wants to make. Production values are high especially Cinematography and Background scores. Mahesh did his best for the role. There is no forced comedy or side tracks. I would prefer to watch the whole movie without any songs. Once again. hats off to Sukumar!!  |
