Simba:I know, Nikon is at 1.6x on DX lenses. Most of my lenses are FX-based, so there is no conversion.
More of sensor based I believe, cameras with cropped censors use 1.6X factor (even for FX lenses) vs. cameras with full frame censors.
Feldgrau:ilanti setting edo try chesthe complete black pics vachayi
If you want to get an idea on settings, auto mode lo photo theesi, picture EXIf data choodandi. Then manual mode lo aa settings use chesi tiyyandi, from there play with the settings as you shoot more pictures. Meeku aa website lo laaga exact ga kaavali antay, 1. use a black back drop. 2. choose a window with good lighting. 3. shoot at the widest aperture possible. 4. Do not use flash at all.
Feldgrau:also do you use remote camera triggers?
triggers are needed when your shutter speeds are really low (~1/25 and higher). you do not have to set really low shutter speeds for these kind of shoots. |

Filmbuff:translates to a 100 mm
that works. the idea is to have large focal length. TIL, Olympus has 2x conversion. I know, Nikon is at 1.6x on DX lenses. Most of my lenses are FX-based, so there is no conversion. |

Simba:I like the closeups that cover just face, part of body, just feet etc where the subject really stands out from foreground/background. If you are familiar with macro photography (Canon calls it micro), use the same technique for closeups.
But i can do this with my prime too, i don't need a telephoto to do this...if you have a low enough aperture, you should get a good bokeh anyway... My prime is a bit long (at 50 mm and 2 times conversion for Olympus it translates to a 100 mm on a traditional camera). So my prime gives a good telephoto look too and also doubles up as a half decent macro... |

Filmbuff:Why no prime?
Prime is good to take a portrait of 80% of body when standing at 6 feet from subject. I like the closeups that cover just face, part of body, just feet etc where the subject really stands out from foreground/background. If you are familiar with macro photography (Canon calls it micro), use the same technique for closeups. |

I use a prime which is 50 mm which i feel is too wide for indoor portraits...Best is a 35 mm, go for an aperture 1.8 or even better 1.4. Don't use flash if possible. Prime no length fixed, aperture fixed...an 800-1200 will suffice...it is just trial and error.
Simba:No prime.

Feldgrau:what about flash and ISO settings?
Assuming this being shot indoors, depending on your camera's capabilities, use about 1200 - 1600 ISO. No flash direct flash. If you must, bounce flash off the ceiling. |

No prime. Use the lens with max. focal length. For ex: if you have 55-200mm lens, use it at 200mm setting. Stand about 8-10ft from subject (kid) and shoot. You get close up of face or part of the body. If you want more in the picture, stand little far from subject. They come out better than portrait lens. Give it a shot. |
