Digital currencies will slowly gain traction and will become a part of mainstream. The German finance ministry has already accepted it as a unit of account. The article below in this week's Economist gives a good overview of Bitcoin. I don't understand it fully, even partially though i get the drift. I need to actually implement it in practice to get a first hand idea. Of course there are some issues still.
