Yeah - a lot of that will be lost in translation First idi chadivaka - pakkana sanskrit version petti chadavali anukuntunna- if I get to that
Idi baguntadi , kapote language konchem archaic ga untundi..and the version translated is different.. Debroy has removed that and made it a simpler language , still sticking with the spirit..its easier to read.. Also Debroy translates the Poona Critical edition which was compiled from the various versions available in different regions and the vernacular translations..the scholars on th project compared and arrived at ahat they believed was most likely closest to the original ... people(including Debroy) have differences with that too- because again it was a judgment of those scholars ...
I get what you are saying ...and thanks,that is an interesting column by Bibek I think you missed the context of his statement though - he said he was not a pundit while translating sanskrit poetry and acknowledging that he could not crack a couple alliterative verses..That does not make him incapable of translating Those verses reminded me of "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" which is supposedly a complete sentence but I still have not understood how Language and wordplay is a lot of fun The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim | ||

anand, i am not saying he shoould not do it.......I am all for new translations.....i am curious because if someone is translating some book which was translated so many times ante the reason could be they think the earlier translations did not do justice(one has to be an expert in sanskrit for this) to the book or they also want to take a shot at it and get something out of the process or they want to interpret it their own way http://themotherindia.com/2013/05/08/sanskrit-tidbits-40the- brilliance-of-sanskrit-poet-magha/ in the link above, he mentions he is not a sanskrit pundit | ||

don't know the true transalation kaani original ki unde kick veru gaa untadhi.. oka saari oka peddayana chepparu vyasa maharshi chesina chamakku at uttara gograhanam.. nadhi jalan kesava naari kethuhu.. idhi as it is gaa chadivithe nadhi jalam anda lakshmi devi jendaa ani vasttundhi.. but actual gaa choostte Nadhija - bheeshma lankesa - ravanudu vanaari - vanannni dwamsam chesina vyakthi kethuhu -jenda kaliginavaadu ante bheeshma vachhedhi arjunude kadha ani adagadanni ila adigaadu anna maata dhuryodhanudiki telvakunda... mana thikkana aithe as it is gaa iragesaadu akkada 3 padhyaalu and inka peaks ante vachhinavaadu falgunudu ane padhyam.. i liked Ganguly saabs transalation read few chpters.. We had talked about translations of Mahabharata ... I had read the abridged version of K.M Ganguli's translation and then read parts of the unabridged version online...and was looking for an unabridged academic translation without commentary.. Well,my search led me to the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute's Critical edition of the Mahabharata .. and to my delight, the english translation of BORI Critical edition taken up by Bibek Debroy...He is translating the critical edition in 10 volumes and has finished 7 so far Received the first volume , rest are in transit .. Halfway through Volume 1, and I like it ... it is what I was looking for - plain translations, without opinions,interpretations or commentary within the text ...hence sharing ...
