Actually the "Great Society" is said to be JFK's brain child. He had hoped to implement this if he were elected in 1964. As soon as he assumed office, he was faced with the bay of pigs invasion disaster and soon after in October 1962 there was a cuban missile crisis with US on the brink of nuclear war with USSR.
