An inquisitive law student filed an RTI to ascertain the process of recommendation of people for Bharat Ratna. As per the reply, the Prime Minister recommends the names to the President. Interestingly, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were awarded the Bharat Ratnas when they served as Prime Ministers making it seem that they themselves recommended their names for the highest civilian honour. If this is true, we leave it to the reader to decide if their decisions were appropriate given the conflict of interest involved in recommending oneself for such a prestigious honour. It also makes one admire the other PMs of India like Vajpayee, PV Narsimha Rao who could have done the same, but didn’t. http://nationalizer.wordpress.com/2013/11/20/nehru-and-indir a-recommended-themselves-for-bharat-ratna/ http://www.theindianrepublic.com/featured/did-nehru-indira-g andhi-bharat-ratna.html |
