//Yes, it works. Does your laptop have DVI out? If so, use DVi-HDMI cable to connect to TV. Get external keyboard/mouse (wireless preferred).// oh wow! reading those links made me think it wouldn't work due to fan, heat etc. I will check if my laptops have DVI...the i5 one i bought it in 2010, expecting it to have it. the pentium one is from 2007 i guess. |

Rebel:buy mac-mini as htpc
You are good for most part. OS X does not support bluray (if you connect external drive) OS X does not decode or bitstream HD-Audio (DTS-MA, Dolby DTS+) If you can live with that, you are good. |

Simba, will do. If a laptop would suffice (may be after replacing HDD with SSD), I have two old laptops - one is pentium dual core (XP) and other is first gen i5 (win 7). Renditiki battery gone anamaata, so just hooking up to the power constantly should be able to get us an HTPC? |

@Jalsa, Why do you think desktops are relatively cheaper than laptop with lower specs? Because of form factor. You can purchase any desktop in the deals and call it HTPC. If you want to throw aesthetics into it, you will have to pick a case that matches your A/V components. Who wants to have a big ass machine under the TV? You pay premium for Intel NUC but is very easy to setup. Intel recently refreshed the NUCs with Haswell processors, so you can score deals on pre-Haswell models. There is right way to build HTPC. It depends on your budget, taste, skills. |

This was interesting, "Next Unit of Computing" - NUC anta...choostunna details. But, thanksgiving ki dead cheap lo celeron or i3 desktop dorikithey, from there, adding a separate GPU (if haswell i3 with integrated GPU should be fine,i think) should suffice kadha? http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=112 I looked at that, but looks like XBMC cannot do transcoding to use with DLNA? |

Easiest way, may not be economic. Buy "Intel NUC", pop in two sticks of memory and a mSATA card for storage. Install the OS of your choice. |

Brother, want to build/buy a HTPC. Based on the below post from you, since quite a bit of us have that "gula" (again quoting ;-)), it would be great if you can guide us. Since this is a deals week, we might be able to get it within a reasonable price as well: http://www.chalanachithram.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=1 15&post=3848729#POST3848729 |
