I guess we are mixing up Charter Schools and Magnet Schools. Magnet schools are like regular public schools (at least in our county). They are very similar to rest of the public schools except that they have private/public partnerships with outside institutions for funding/programs/collaboration etc. Magnet schools do have play grounds and PE classes, in fact they have more emphasis on physical activity, like dance, etc. |

Another downside - these schools do not have the same teacher certification rqmts as public schools - so while they advertise that they get highliy qualified people - they may not necessarily be good teachers or know how to handle kids - so check the reputations of the teachers in the school too The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

You may So it is sheer luck..generally if the reputation is of an academically rigorous school - they weed out the non-performers over time .. My younger one started in one this year -TO me that kind of pressure on the kid is not necessary -but I was outnumbered The 3 guys in the family all thought it was great idea - so I said lets give it a shot since its only middle school- so read my opinion with a pinch of salt cos I did not start unbiased Its academically rigorous , lots of homework,he is doing h/w till 9-10 pm everyday Lots of testing - so the pressure is mounting now for him No PE - and no time in the evenings to play either other than weekend We have to pay for all the extracurriculars and musical instrument rental for band etc. which used to be free in the public school (thankfully they do have band and he is able to continue playing the instrument he started in the public school) SO while he has been doing ok - I am yet to see the real benefits in terms of knowledge (but it has been only 3 months ) I do see the costs in terms of free time ..if you want your kids to be totally busy with no time to think about anything else these schools are good We have another year before we need to make the decision to stay in charter for high school or move back to public The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

depends on the funding schools receive...the two magnet public schools in our county receive funding from Kennedy Center and has tie ups with the center, so the schools are more inclined towards Arts though school title says 'Magnet school for Arts & Sciences'. If kids are artistically inclined, then these schools are very good for them. |

Charter schools are kidn of outsourced schools. when State doesnt have enough momey to buy new schools they outsource to pvt folks to build and operate schools. They get paid @9K per student per year No Signature |
